I painted a plastic guitar case with acrylic paints but I need something to seal it on - something really durable and waterproof. What can I use?
Please help! I've called all the craft and hardware stores and they don't have a clue.
Here's my case: http://picasaweb.google.com/alina.kelman/Case?authkey=Dxocqqyruzw
Real cool case..Great artwork!!!...if it were me I'd a prepped it to use an Automotive Uro Clear for the final coat....If you didn't prep it for that though..It'd be hard to go around that artwork, sanding and degreasing without touching it.
If you prepped the whole thing all spiffy clean before you put on the art, I'd go that route, if you don't have the equipment to do it, look for a body shop that might do it for you.
Just a thought anyway:D

go talk to an automotive car body shop. ask about what they would use to 'seal/clear' a plastic car bumper... THEN go back to whatever brand of paint you used and ask them IF the paint can be clear coated with 'something' to help protect it..
you might end up trying the paint on another object, just to see if the clear eats it.

Your Kinda working backwards IMO. You should know what Your going to use through the whole process first , The Keyword is Like Dell said , is Prep , & Depending on the paint & material being painted Depends on the type of Prep.
Also not Knowing where Your from Limits tips for different products . Durable & Waterproof = Uro clears . But no guarantee how They,ll work on your project. & You need the proper place to paint them & protection. Best of Luck, & Welcome .

acrylic ? it comes in many forms but lets say its waterbase then if so it can be cleared with most any comercial product from brush aplied polyurathane varnish to two pack acrylic or urothane two k
spray cans will do it fine as well
main concern would be did you use an adhesion promoter on the plastic first ?as if not then it is likely that your work will eventualy peel unless of course the item was already factory painted in which case a promoter isnt required just a good key

Yep, plastic is tricky to paint on.
Try looking at plaid.com the craft paint company. They make a few sealers for crafting projects that should work on plastics fine. If your original artwork sticks just fine than make a point to reseal the case every so often - every year say.
I just did my gray Samsonite piggyback suitcase with a huge strip of pink and gray flames - looks great.
And now you know prep work pays off, always plan your project and products thru to hang on to your artwork.

Alina, most acrylics can be clear coated with urethanes. Do a quick test piece and bring it to a body shop for a quick clear. They'll do it when they do a car.

The Plaid clear probably won't take the kind of flexing and bending the plastic case would put it through.
Like most of the others, I would do a test piece and take it to an auto shot and have them shoot some clear on it when they can.
Ideally (I know it's already been said), you need to work out your whole process BEFORE you lay down your first bit of paint. The problems are now glaringly aparrent to you to a certain extent, but you also run risks with the solvents from urethane paints on the plastic case itself. That's all you need now, to have the case start melting away because of the MEK and or laquer thinner solvents from the clear coat.
Good luck, and let us know what you ended up doing, and how it turned out!
