Having limited access to flat panels, what would be a good replacement to paint on that will show my attempts?

Plexi Glass works good, Local hardware usually has it, Cheap too...Get a few panels cut to whatever size.
....Preps easy enough, degrease, scuff, degrease again and paint....Just a suggestion

For practice on fabric,,,
get a single, flat, white, bedsheet,, tear in half,,,
gives a LARGE practice panel and very inexpensive !!!
Only a couple $$ and tear in half makes it cheeeper !!!

After I found a sign supplier, the sign blanks are great. I use AA paints. Paint what I want, say "that don't look right", spray with fantastic and it is gone.

Don't prep the sign blank and it all washes off.

Have to say thanks to Whit for talking sign blanks.

White paper towels..That is what I learned on... Then went on to pvc plastic sign blanks, bought by the 4x8 sheet then cut it to size much cheaper...
What about a dry erase board, Wipe with reducer if using automotive...

I scuff with a scotch brite pad...wipe down with 50/50 concentrated Simple green concentrate solution, then water. (thanks Saint) I use AA paints, no urethanes until clear. Less nasty chemicals around for me to soak up.

plain white paneling from home depot or where ever. A whol 4'x8' sheet is like $11.00 it's smooth, takes paint real well and cuts with a utility knife.

I use alot of different things to practice on. I used foam board because I can get it for a quarter at the dollar store, the backs of metal yardsale signs from walmart 96 cents each , Slightly stained white Ts you can buy from goodwill by the bundle for $3, Sheets like Whit said, toilet seats you can get for $5 at walmart, Wooden cutting boards from the dollar tree, plain canvas from walmart for $4.79 a yard, a large roll of roof flashing (comes in different widths) you can cut it to the size you like. The last roll I bought was from Menards for about $20. I have even bought cookie sheets from the dollar store and painted on the backs of those...I like to paint on different things so that I can get a feel for painting on the different surfaces.

Not sure if that helps you out any or if that is just a bunch of rambling... but here it is! lol

Well I have a different on it. I'm at the shop so much working. So I order out alot and usally go get pizza slices. They put them in the white pizza box. A lot of times in the middle of jobs or waiting things. I doodle a lot on the boxes. I do a lot of freehand. And the boxes come it handy.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Didn't realize there were so many things to use. I do have one question, if I don't scuff the plexiglass will there be a problem of the paint peeling off when using a frisk stencil? One last question, can you wipe the paint off easier if it's not scuffed?

Thanks everyone

What type of paint are you using? Generaly paint will adhere to a scuffed surface better than a smooth surface.

I use createx paints. the reason I asked is I wanted a surface I could re-use as a practice board. See, I make alot of mistakes and to keep the cost down I wanted something I could wipe clean and start over. :)

Createx whould peel off plexiglass if you don't scuff it. Even if you scuff it Createx "might" not stick too well, it's not really a hard surface paint. But it should be ok to practice on and masking "shouldn't peel it off that easy if you scuff it. But you never know.

steel mailboxes from lowe's or home depot work great and then you can sell them when you're done! just scotch-brite them and wipe down with a good degreaser, rubbing alcohol, or even windex if you don't have access to anything else.

One day I hope to be able to sell something but at this moment I'm happy if my attempts even come close to resembling a picture :).
