:cuppa: I've offered up my services to paint a pointing finger sign that says Information on it. The sign is to be used indoors, painted both sides, hung from rafters. I thought about making it out of 1/2" plywood but it may be hard to find some thats smooth on both sides. Or maybe some kind of foam core? The lettering will be about 10" high so maybe overall sign length3+ feet. Any suggestion on what to cut the sign out of would be appreciated.

try plexiglass or fiberglass. Not sure what paint you're gonna use but the wood will soak up the paint.

Lumber supply for a sanded plywood and a good primer coat should keep the wood from soaking the paint up. Or even a piece of masonite.

Ask for an "MDO" board,,,
stands for medium density overlay,,,
it's what we use for signs here !!!
It's a plywood (exterior grade)
and probably a half inch would work
for your cutout on the hand !!!
Extremely smooth overlay ready
for paint (primer/topcoat) ...
Can be rolled or sprayed for a good
finish,, we use enamels for a topcoat
and at times use a latex for primer !!!
Smooth as a baby's butt !!!

The MDO is a plywood with what looks
to be a brown paper overlay (but not paper)
and has an extremely long outdoor life
for a plywood !!! Smooth as well !!!
In Texas,,, the Big Green Hiway Directional
signs are made with this board !!!
The board,, with it's overlay,, maintanes
it's own integrety,, so needs fewer screws
or bolts to fasten,, as it does'nt warp !!!
With a good prime and oilbase finish,,,
you've got a board good for 10/15 years !!!
