View Full Version : Flames and Skull
Hi
This was my first attempt at "true fire" , it's done with HOK on a metal fender (off my flatbed trailer)
(ignore the skull , I was concentrating on the fire, so the skull is still quite "stencilly")
Comments please !! :gossip:

very nice for a first... Next one you could try not too mix up the color by doing layer instead.

VERY good for a first try! It just amazes me how people who are non-airbrushers see this stuff and think it's easy....you gotta SSSTUDY to do it right! (not that I've got it right, but I'm workin on it!
you gonna bring that skull out with some hot color now?

Looks great for a first timer.. but I see dull colors.. need to make it POP>>
add white then yellow on top for a brighter color..
I followed the steps on Mike Lavallee's True fire DVD, and used the colours exactly as he recommended.
I did use some white and yellow , but I think the final pagan gold kandy coat "pushed the white back" a bit.
Any recommendations on colours for the skull ?
I'd like to add some detail , but don't want to kill the picture with black.
I'm actually quite proud of the skull ,beacause I had a large drop of paint fall right onto the top of the skull, when I wiped it off, it removed all the layers under it right down to the black base :rage:
You can see the dark area in the top right crack of the skull, where I managed to cover the damage. Should be completely gone when the skull is detailed.

could it be that the colors in the pic aren't the same as you're lookin at? Looks dark on this end.....Lavalee does a skull at the end of that tru-fire vid...shoot for some of the same I'd say!
I'll take a better pic out in the sun when it's complete.
The colours should show up then.

Look it took me a few times to get those stencils to work for me Vatos said it best you really need to do mre freehand with them and keep reference around for them definately nice for a first attempt. If you look at reference of fire it shows you where your layers of colors go to give the effect. I personaly got them looking good after I put the video away and loosened up on my method and instead of trying to use the stencils so much I concentrated on the flow of the fire. Do the skull in white and then make it glow with pagan yellow hit the darker areas with tangerine it makes a nice effect hope this helps for the skull and the next time you do fire.
Thanks for the great advice, I'll be sure to post more pics when I have another go at flames.
