a few quiestions

hey every body if you could please give me a few hints here it would be greatly appreciated.

1. in the link below why is the entire painting done in a brown color first?
2. i really dont know like the basics of painting and how paint works can you help?
3. are there any free how too's or training programs becides what is here on the site?
i am very new at this and i will greatly appreciate any info
