Here's a mdo painted sign I just finished for my buddy. Used my plotter to cut the stencils and pinstripped by hand. I tried to ab some shadows on the lettering but didn't come out as defined as I wanted. He was very pleased. Thx MP

Yep, looks sweet. Nice job.

What motivated you to use MDO? I used to use MDO by the ton, but with the advent of modern sign making materials I've started using less and less MDO. It's just much more difficult to prep and seal properly to make it stand up to the elements when compared to composite materials that are readily available for the same price or less.

Thx Jimmy BW and Dell. As far as using mdo, it's a step up from when I used reg plywood...yucchh! I can't afford hdu unless customer wants that type (only did one 3'x5' by hand once). Never crossed my mind to try anything else BW. I only do signs on the side and the mdo seems relatively cheap at about $50 or so a 4'x8' sheet from Menards. MP

Look into PolyMetal or what is refered to in the trade as CBond. It's 1/4" polyethelene plastic wrapped in aluminum. Sweet stuff, indestruictable, and so much easier to finish than MDO, and about the same price or a bit cheaper than MDO. No edge treatment required, but it forms with standard wood working tools just likd MDO does. MDO is still the cat's ass if you have to have something 1/2" or 3/4", but MDO really is a pain in the ass when it comes to sealing it and maintenance.

Thx Ron I'll have to check into that. Is that Cbond mainly for vinyl? I just about paint all my signs with waterborne acrylic enamels. I get the paint from TrueValue and it's mar and fade resistant, holds up great for $8 a qt. MP

It's PET skinned with a thin layer of aluminum, so you prep it just like you would any project you'd paint on aluminum.

Thx Whit, and Ron is the Cbond someplace like signwarehouse carries? MP

I doubt signwarehouse carries it, they don't carry much in the way of substrates since they mainly deal in mail (internet) order. Any local sign supply shop that deals in substrates, the same places that will carry MDO, will also carry CBond. I've got a bunch of small pieces of drop around here. If you want to check it out without buying a full sheet I'll be happy to send a piece your way.

That would really be helpful Ron, Alot of times I like to paint signs that look all beat up and weathered so reg ply or mdo is good. But that address sign would be a good application for Cbond. Let me know what kinds of sizes ya got and I'll take up ur offer, thanks. MP

Nice work on the sign. Nepco sign supplies is a good source for all substrates. They seem to have everything you need. They are located in RI but I haven't had any probs with em.
