Hi All! I lurk here some, just don't post much. Tyr to stay busy paintin'. A customer brought me one of those half helmets like the harley guys wear. It looks DOT but it's not. A very glossy black plastic. I degreased it, scuffed it, and when I sprayed the ahesion promoter on it, I got orange peel after a few minutes. It looks like it actually cracked the plastic. I've painted plenty of plastic items behore with no problems, using the same steps / materials as I always do. Any ideas on what would cause this? A remedy to prevent it from happening again?

Thanks for looking and Happy Holidays!

IMO, the AP dissolved the plastic... I would be HIGHLY suspicious of that helmet being approved..

perhaps you need to inquire-is this going to be a WORN helmet, or a SHOW helmet-never worn.
IF worn, IMO, this is NOT a kosher legal helmet necessarily, and I would really like to see proof that is is,.

if it's a Dot helmet, there should be two stickers on it, one on the outside somewhere. If you can't find that one there should be one on the inside, could be underneath the padding . If not, even though he may tell you it's just for show. There's no guarantee that he won't wear it. If he does and is involved in an accident, the insurance comany will be all over you,and you could be liable. Speaking for myself I would not touch that helmet with a 10 foot pole. As far as the adhesion promoter affecting the helmet, I can't buy that. Helmet mfg's just do not manufacture buckets that are not of a composite material. Fiberglass, carbon fibre,or kevlar or a combination of these materials. If possible post a photo. It will give us a better idea. Just be CAREFUL WITH THIS BUCKET. You did say plastic didn't you or is that just the term you used?

I appreciate the tip Rise. It is plastic, it's a novelty helmet that supposedly "will not be worn" . I'll have the custom sign something to exclude me from any liability. I've got a call into my lawyer to see if this will suffice.

For my knowledge though, would like to find out what caused it and how to prevent it in the future. Done this many times with never a problem. It's gotta be the type of plastic, which it has no tags/stickers or anything to tell me what it is.

Thanks for tips/info though guys! Merry Christmas!
