I mentioned in another post I have the op to get in with a local gold wing club. I called them up and backed out saturday, they needed samples by then and I had another anxiety attack and was out of it for a week. The guy called me up tuesday , he took my flyer to the meeting, the other guys said I can still come if I want, even if I don't set up to paint, they want to see me pursue this , so I told him, I'd do my best.
BUT, I have to learn scrolls, then working in front of people. Well first the scrolls~
I started out, printed pics of the guy's bike, and attempted to draw them~
http://www.pinheadlounge.com/portfolios/bbs_scrollMedium.JPG
Then with clear cover sheets by Avery, printed out designs and traced them~

But I felt like I just wasn't getting the rythum of it, tracing others work, just wasn't teaching me anything. So, I started studying other peoples works, noticing small elements, mainly I gotta get the swirls better. I got them to work on glass then went back to my posters.
So, all day yesterday~

and then I attempted a design piece.

today I did this~

I think doing all those blasted swirls I finally got it!
Now I'm on to building a sample book to take to the bike show!
thanks for looking, hope this persistance in swirls will help someone else :wavey:

WOW Carlene...alls I can say is your stripes look so ready to lay down on anything from a VW bug, to a Gold Wing, to a Mercedes Bienz, Jaguar or a dang Rolls Royce, and all sorts of other classy Autos and Bikes in between...
What ya worried about Carlene, your stripes and curlies are Major Primo....!!!!
Thank you much for putting up the pictures of your practice dedications....Lay some Lines on some folks expensive stuff and show us back your pictures of that, you are a major inspiration for us pinstripers here....

Take high quality photos of each piece in or for your portfolio, that will let you build a digital version you can send out on a CD, or pull individual samples to email perspective clientelle.
It also gives you a way to show off your stuff from a laptop computer.
Make sure you sign and date all your samples too.

thanks guys! I hadn't seen anything anywhere of routines to help with scrolls (never ordered the wizard's tape either) So I figured this might help.
I have both an online albums in pinhead/photobucket and my better things printed in a carry album. I can see a big difference!

eek! lol!
Had a friend offer to send me one of his 3 kafkas to try out, then I got the bobbo working. But yeah I was wondering if they were longer. Maybe I can have him send it anyways, I can't afford to buy any more supplies for awhile unless I get a few jobs. What size would you recommend? He has 0,1,3. He hasn't had much time to mess with them lately (building cars) and is quite jealous lol!
With the bobbo, I do one swirl at a time then reload, and do another. Those last designs are pretty long. Where as my practice circles were much smaller. I want to do many sizes in between. On the fat feathers in the lite blue and purple, is actually a cheap soft brush. Bobbo just won't do those short fat lines with any flair, look more like blobs. I have a mack liner, #2 and it makes square tipped lines, which doesn't flow with these designs. (though on this guy's bike, the inner feathers are square tipped), it looked a bit off.
I'm painting on the glossy painted posters and old photo album pages (those that you peel back from a stickie backing, found 20 of them stuffed in the closet, no stickie left, but good slick surface).
Soon as I get a fancy job I'll sure post it! Right now I'd be happy with some nice 70* air so I can add these to my own car!
Thanks~

Lookin Good,,, Lookin Good !!!
I remember working the car shows,,,
you get involved in what you're doing,,,
then you hear a crunch of candy/chips
wrapper,,, look around to find about 50
people watching you were'nt aware off,,,
all of a sudden,, it's breaktime (hahahaha)
you get used to it I guess,, but it's always
good to take a break,, let the crowd dwindle
and continue till the next crackle,, then break !!!
Good Luck on it,,, don't forget the pics !!!

Carlene,
You are attacking this properly. Giving it your all. Looking at your progress gives me hope of learning the technique as well.
Anther brush to consider is the laser lines scrollers. Mack Brush is now the supplier They were highly toted this past weekend in Chicago as the scroll brush of choice

Hi guys~ got the kafkas last friday, my friend sent the 1, 3 and a 00 longliner. (Haven't tried the longliner)
and another friend loaned me a dvd Of Steve doing some of his designs. So I've been going at it again.
Did the same thing , several pages of swirls, then did some designs.
Yes, there's a difference with the kafkas.

Yesterday I did 'sets' and went back to the bobbo, the wasn't cooperating with me. It's a bit longer so I'm having to learn how to support my hand again, 1 yr old habit to adjust aint easy, neither are short fingers!
I figured since most bikes have 3 or 4 designs, I'd get in the habit of doing 1 color at a time on 4 designs.
I also found I can get cleaner balanced designs with a simple grid, so I printed some out and slid in these cover sheets.

Purple, the designs on the sheet protectors can be layed over tanks, skins or fenders for potential clients to get an idea of what they would look like on thier vehicles.
You could split those protectors down the opposite side from the holes to let you get two sets of designs on one protector sheet, with the ability to lay them on a vehicle or new background for viewing, and still be able to store them in your binder/portfolio.
Or maybe keep a few sheets of different colored stock to be able to slip into the page protectors for general viewing.
I'm not sure I understood what you wrote about the Kafka brushes. Did you like them or not, and why?
I was looking at the Laser Lines brushes at Coast Airbrush a couple of days ago, and I found I like the shortest of the handles best, which is or seems odd to me. I have large hands and I had thought that the short handles would have been cumbersome for me, but the curves of the handle made it very easy for me to deal with. My concerns with them are; How well do the ferrels stay in the handles, and what is the quality of the bristles. I remember all the hubub when they were introduced because of the interchangeable brushes and handles, but not all that much after that initial splurge in the media.
Any knowledgeable, non-wildly biased opinions or info out there?
