hey guys
been asked to paint one of these
http://www.3dhobbyshop.com/detail.aspx?ID=2345
:nature-smiley-006:
the owner said its balsa interior coated with white Ultracote.
where do i start...
just found out what i needed to know after being asked to paint an rc boat with gelcoat on it....
then along comes this painting proposal. another thing i dont have a clue about.
all good though, having to learn new things all the time. does the brain good. :)
anyway, anyone with any experiences on the subject, input greatly appreciated.
cheerz,
jon
:)
I just put one of those together for a pal..Was an old one, made out of fiberglass over balsa wood...Most gel coats/fiberglass I prep like anything else...Clean, Sand, clean, Prime..etc.....One thing with gel coat and glass..Sometimes if you sand to deep you'll expose lil pinholes in the resin/gelcoat...Sometimes they are hard to see till you paint over them, then they stick out like crazy..
Easy to cover if you expose them, just glaze over with resin or bodyfill, sand smooth..Works for me anyway:D

cool, thanks hi rise.
sorry if this is a silly question, but you said it is fuel proof, so no clear coat was needed? whats fuel proof, the basecoat you used? surely you need a clear coat to have a glossy finish? or did you use 1k paints? they dry to a gloss finish dont they?
sorry for all the silly questions, i just like to be totally clear on things.
cheerz!

is this the mfg paint you are on about? will certain 1k paints work.
i dont really want to be trying to source various new products for one job.
cant i paint with my normal paints but use a certain clear that is suitable? arent normal 2k clears suitable and fuel proof?

the gunk that comes out of a RC engin is very oily as its made up from nitomethonal and oils like caster its very thick ,
the main problem painting ultra coat is it streches in heat and shinks and after time it will start to rinkle so after some time your hard work would be wasted as it would flake of
If its just the cowl he wants painted well knock your self out and go to town on it but make sure you fule proof it
