Hello,

I am prepping some cheap fiberglass canopies I found on eBay. Used a sanding sponge (~200 or 300 grit) and got the clear sanded mostly off, leaving a nice and smooth finish with some sanding marks visible. I shot a coat of DupliColor Adhesion Promoter, and it wrinkled in a few areas. Mainly the white and black sections.

I have used their AP several times in the past on my fiberglass canopies with nothing but success. The only difference is this canopy is a cheapy pre-painted one off of eBay. The canopy was new, and it seems to have had a two-stage paint job. The clear sanded off as translucent white dust, then once I got down to the color coats I could see the color in the sanding dust.

Is this an issue of trying to use a lacquer-based AP on something that may have been painted with enamel or who knows what? Any tips or ideas are much appreciated.

do you really need to use AP? Why not just scuff and prime? What primer would you use; if solvent based, that too might react. Only thing you can do is remove old coating of whatever it is down to bare substrate. No need for AP on fibre glass

If The Ap Yer using is Laq Based Thats Definatlly Yer Problem , Laqs Dont get along with anything BUT Laqs . Best of Luck Sorting it Out .

I guess if this lacquer based AP won't stick well to whats on the canopy, sanding the AP off and shooting a layer of HoK Basecoat White will not stick well either?

Would shooting some 2k clear as a basecoat work? I use the stuff from Virtus. Any other easy way (non 2k)?

duplicolor deals with laquers if you read there cans there at home hobbie paint do it your self while we get rich selling pre mixed laquer. See duplicolor making allot of money of inexperianced painters this way seeing most paint out there is uro on cars.

Without Knowing exactlly what type of Paint is on it , Be just a Guessing game Farrell , Uro bases will Normally not have a bad Reaction with Most paints as much as the Laquer does because there reducers are No where aggresive of Laqs Which is Close to 75% thinner & 25% paint if Yer lucky .

as a General Rule You can shoot Uros, Over Laquer , But Not the other way around . At Least not Without a lot of experience under Yer Belt. & Not have problems Or adhesion issues later on.

I,d say if You get most of the Damaged paint off, Then You might have a chance with the 2k . I Dont Know Much about Refinishin the rcs . So I,ll let Some one else Suggest Primers . Best of luck .
