A little while ago I asked for suggestions for things to paint on while'st practising, afew of you suggested sign blanks. I've managed to track a firm down in the uk that will supply them, whats a good size to get?, do you get them ready primed or are they bare metal?.

They come powder coated white on both sides (the ones here do anyway), so just scuff with a grey scuff pad and paint away. The sizes I like are either 12" X 18" or 18" X 24". The smaller ones are about 1/3rd the price so if you can deal with the small size go for them, I pay $5 for the smaller ones.

Tomcat, it really depends on what type of graphix you want to practice. Clinton's got you covered on sizes, I do motorcycle work, so the 12 x 18's cover well, two sides to mess up, and they're cheap! I do use some 18 x 24's though.

I use old windows I find on the side of the road there FREE If it's only practice you can always sell for a stained glass window wannabee
We usually keep a supply of 18x24
blanks here for realty yard signage !!!
The ones we get are factory finish
white,, ready to go,, but need scruffing
for a change of color instead of white !!!
Great Surface to play on,, be it airbrush,,
pinstriping,, or general signwork !!!
Tempered masonite (finished 1 side) for
bathroom walls is another great surface
and readily available at builders supplies
but comes in 4x8 sheets and needs cutting
down to a workable size,, 4x8's nice too
for those larger projects !!!
They have you covered about the sign blanks. I finally listened to them and found a place with a reasonable price.
I use Auto Air paints, water base, so as a practice board it will all wash off. I do put myself in a tougher position by not scuffing them. Could be wrong but i think it makes me pay more attention to the paint and surface.
For me the sign blanks are great.

I went to a local sign shop and bought their scrap pieces prepainted white and black.... If you are using for practice do not scuff and wipe down when done.
If you want to preserve them, then you will have to scuff, paint and clear. Any size will work, depends on what you want to do with them and what you want to simulate when painting onthem. I hope this helps.
