I've been getting a few calls form people wanting body painting done, so I need some help on starting out. Anyone know what type of paint is the best to use. I've found the temp tattoo stuff but I'm beeing asked for body painting for shows ect nothing that will last, something that washes off. Can't seem to track anything down, the colours I need to start with are Gold Silver and Bronze. Any help or direction would be great, thanks.

Mehron has a powder you mix and apply - very popular in photography circles... Graftobian has a hybrid mix that is soap and water clean up.
Me, I'll stick with the alcohol based products - sprays like a dream, you can build opacity, and you don't have to set with powder. For even a short photo session, I prefer the way alcohol based products lay on the skin.
Clean up is much easier with tem tat paints if you coat the painted area in an extra-dry thearapy hand lotion and let it sit for a couple of minutes... then start clean up.
Just to be clear, I've earned my preferences by brand experimenting which has led me to a professional affiliation with Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics as their Premier Bodypainter...

Thanks for the reply, so do they have an alcohol based paint that will wash off? The work that I was contacted about is for a one day event, so they need to be very temp. Thanks again.

Graftobian is a water/alcohol hybrid... it is soap and water washable.
I'm sure there are other brands also people will come and discuss - looking forward to the input!
The alcohol inks I use are harder to remove - that being the point.
However, I find that by using the hand lotion to break down the paint, clean up is much faster.
If the paint has to stay on a model all day, I'd stress the alcohol. Stands up to rubbing, heat and activity.
With any paint, watch what the model sits on... or you'll get a real funny seat print... a bathroom towel does the trick for the alcohol based. And watch the leg crossing - no point in tempting fate! Although, again, alcohol stands up to this "abuse"....

Check the Artool line of temp tat paints - they have a pretty good selection. Dixie ART has kits or individual colors. You can use baby powder to set the paint and suitable stencils can be found at your local arts and crafts store (if you want to use them).

Many alcohol based "shimmer" or "glitter" inks do not have to be set with babypowder - they are self setting... everything else, yes, set with powder.
Ben-Nye carries a translucent powder that 1) won't change to color of your work 2) has an antipersperant in it....
If your doing a full body paint the alcohol based paint is very hard to get off.Water based body paint would be your best bet. Trendy Tribals has a great line of water based airbrush body paints including a Frosted Metallic and also has a sealer that will help it last longer and still come off with soap and water. www.trendytribals.com

Neil, I looked at your link for getpainted but I didn't any place on it that you sold paints. Am I missing the link or do you not sell paints? If you don't who would you recommend?
Bruce
I don't sell paints, but I do test the different brands. My favorite alcohol inks are Badgers Totally Tattoo, airbrushbodyart(ABA) AND OCC. These are in my opinion the best on the market. For water based Trendy Tribals and Mehron.
I also have an airbrush tattoo/bodyart workshop coming up April 21-22

Hi Everyone,
I a new to this forum but I have alot of experience with face and body paint because I own a face and body paint store.
If you are planning on body painting and the model will be sweating a lot or doing a lot moving or if the event will take place outdoors then you will want to use a stronger paint- more than likely an alcohol based paint. The ABA brand has the best color selection (neon colors-metallics) and they withstand it all. But remember they can only really be removed with babyoil or alcohol and some people don't like to go through all that.
If you are planning on doing a body painting for a photo shoot or for an event that won't require alot of physical activity you could use a water based paint either from Mehron (you have to thin it) or from FAB which is pre mixed for you.
The FAB line has lots of colors including neons.
Its important to make sure you are using products approved for the skin. Createx is the least expensive way to go but the main problem with the createx is that its a plastic paint and peels and cracks off the skin relatively easy.
I hope I didn't bore everyone to death
