I am knew to airbrushing and was thinking of buying a set of Xotic pearl paints and was wondering how often would I actually need it. I know its probably all up to the person painting but I am still curious how often professionals use the pearl paints?

Thanks for your time and opinions

It all depends on what you are painting??? Pear paints are mainly used for graphics and base coats, you wouldnt be using em if you are into airbushing portraits.

I use pearls a lot as well, depending on the project. But I go a different route....I use dry pearl powders rather than get actual pearl paint. That way I have complete control.....I can mix the pearl powders with transparent basecoats to come up with my own color effects and combinations....and I also use them in various types of clears for different effects.

I got frustrated years ago....a good friend of mine owned a body shop and I would do occasional custom paint jobs for him. Every once in a while he would clean out his paint stock and GIVE me all kinds of half-used quarts, mostly Dupont Chroma-Base. Trouble was, they were almost ALL various metallics and pearls....not pure colors. I had that stuff for YEARS.....finally had to take it all to the hazardous materials disposal site here in town to get rid of it. So I vowed to find a better way.....now I just buy pearl powders, it's much cheaper that way and being inert materials, they last forever and never go bad. If you want to know where to get pearl powders much cheaper than getting them from automotive supply sources, send me a PM. Go Steelers!

I've never used the dry! are you guys using the ALSA system?

I paint drag cars a bit and they tend to get banged-up and need touching-up.....the HOK is really consistant from batch to batch which really comes in handy when you have to redo a corner of a car to match the rest. On any job I think might need touching-up I r e a l l y like to use a standardized color. The pearls are I think easier to touch-up than "solid" colors......
