Hi, Dunno if this is in the right section but - I was told that water based paint destroys the bindings on the Mack brushes.
I was wondering if they are ok to use with Alcohol based paints?
I may have a commision comming up that requires a full body length vine and I was thinking of pulling the vine stem like a pinstripe.
Any ideas welcome.

Okay from what I read firstly you need to find what bristles are in the mack, unless you get a developed brush (Specifically for) most water based paints will not stripe properly on a natural bristle alone, although I believ some are mixed with the likes of taklon to give the brush "snap", while the natural bristle carries the paint. Something like the Mack Series 70. Although I have heard mixed reviews on all these brushes developed for water based and acyrlic paints.

The only thing I have heard to do with binding is care on cleaning the brush, not supposed to let any cleaner etc touch the bindings or inside the ferrule. Know some folk swear by a dab of super glue to beef up the binding coating.

Those with the experience will hopefully chime in, just passing what I have read and been told.

Thanks for that Andy.

Alcohol paint is a relative "Fast" dry paint and as a result not
really suited for the "Long" line without some "Ruffness" in
the line,, BUT,,, for a vine (with leaves) it should work !!!
Personally I prefer an oilbase (enamel/uro) for striping,, as the
finish results are a better line,, like you say tho,, vine,, should work !!!
"Snap" is the diff between a "Limp" brush and a brush that holds
it's shape while working,,, I could throw a sexual reference here
but I think you can understand the meaning (hahahaha)
Good Luck on it !!!

Thanks Whit, I'm looking at using Temptu paint and my main concern is that the alcohol based paint will eat my binding on my Mack's ...... I thought this was gonna be a simple thread LOL.
As for "Snap" - Gottcha pmsl
Cheers,
Marty

The older Mack stripers had a water-based,"sizing"in the hair to retain it's shape on the brush cards. It had to be rinsed out with warm water before the brush could be used.
The newer brushes do not use this sizing anymore(note that they are all fluffy)because the adhesive now used to affix the brush hair is water-soluble.Using the original method will cause the hair to fall out rendering the brush useless.
The Mack brushes with synthetic(Taklon)hair which are designed to be used with water based paints all use a crimped metal ferrule to contain the hair.

hahahaha,,, my mack's are all over 10 years old,,,
well,, I got a newer one,, about six years old,,,
mabye seven,, still,, these brushes last,, or at
least the old ones do (did) !!!
No probs at all with the bindings tho as long as
you put them to rest with a lil' oil,,, clean !!!

I have fixed the hairs on Mack brushes by holding the brush up right so the drop of super glue I drop at ferrule runs down into the heel of the bindings. Hairs no longer fall out!
