I am new to vehicle airbrushing; but not airbrushing. Have done lots of artwork on illustration boards.

My question:

Can anyone tell me what type of base or primer to use and which clear topcoat works best on a golf cart (fiberglass body)? Also should I use the same manufacturer for the colors? Unfortunately I have a limited area to work in and the weather is getting much warmer. I will assume that the paints, primers, topcoats are affected by temp and humidity.:whowhere:

Already have the design; just need the important information.

Thanks!

so-what TYPE of paint can you handle? waterbased or solvent based? and waht euqipment and experience you got?

I can spray AA, but have also sprayed solvent based car paints. havent tried HOK or equals yet due to current situations, but.

if your experience is SEVERELY limited, then I might suggest looking for someone near you that does Corvette bodies. They are glass, and you might be able to pick his brain for names and numbers of some supplies that you can use, base coat etc wise.

It Would Help to Know Where You are Located as This is a World Wide Forum . Butit All Depends on Yer Experience level & What You have to work with . Fiberglass is Not that Much different Then Anything Else as Far as Prep & All , Unless It Has Damage or Stress Cracks & I Would Use Uro,s From The bottom up to Clear, But Takes the Right Equipment , Most Importantlly the Safety Equipment needed . As The Materials are Deadly .

Might Seek A Profesional to do the Prep , Base & Clear & Stick to Just the Artwork with Waterbase Paints . Best of Luck & Welcome . CB

My experience is limited to acrylics. My body work days are in the way past; but I can fix dents, cracks, etc. My equipment is a few Iwata brushes and some larger ones for volume spraying and a home-made compressor (portable air tank, reg, filter, etc).

I am in Florida. Hurricane season.

The body on the vehicle is OK. I am just removing some items (name plate, fender covers) to give it a cleaner appearance. The holes will be filled and sanded down and primed.

You mentioned uro's and the right equipment. Is that the only prep material for this application?

Thanks for the Info John . Perty Much the Only Thing I,m aware of Unless You Can Find some Laquer these days . Duplicolor has Some online , You Could Check out. Maybe Check With some of the Local Auto Paint stores .

Granted Laquer is Old School & Outdated & Spraying it is Dangerous Because of Fire & Explosion Risks, But a Hell of a Lot Easy on the ole Body . Just Wear a Decent Respirator .

If Its Fiberglass Gelcoat & No Ones Put Any Cheap Enamel Paint on it You Should,nt have any Issues with the Laquer IF You can Find it.

I,ve been outa the Loop since 2000 so Not Sure What Products are available these days. But Acrylic Enamel Might be Another Option, Allthough if You Use a Hardner Its Also Dangerous to Breath. Or Even oneshot Sign Enamel . Best of Luck & Let Us Know What You can find .

Then I or We can Walk You Through the Steps as Far as Primers & Topcoats . CB

I just looked up duplicolor and they have shaker cans of primer for fiberglass, etc. Would this be OK to use? It still requires a mask and safety precautions. Could I then use any type of paint for the airbrush work?

Hope this is not too many questions...most probably my last; but you never know. LOL

NP , John , That what were here for . By shaker You Mean Aeresol I Assume . Yes That Would Work & Just about Anything can be Painted over Laquer , But Not the Other way Around , As The Reducer in the Laquer Will Eat or Wrinkle Most Enamel based Paints.

If Yer going to Clear the art work with Laquer as well, Then You need to do the art with a Waterbase Color . Hope that Helps . CB
