I paint on illustration board & use FW inks & Com-Art paint. I want to start painting onto metal but I just hate the Auto Air & Createx paints. I find they clog and spit no matter how much I reduce them. I'm so comfortable painting with Com-Art paint, I wondered why it isn't suitable for painting onto primed metal (or is it?). Is it because of a lack of adhesion? Any advice/information would be appreciated. Thanks.

this not going to be used outside? you just using the metal as a substitute canvas?

I dont use it, but whats the difference between canvas or board, and a properly primed metal??

Not an "expert", but... If your metal is going to be your new canvas & is not going to be exposed to the elements (as on a bike or exterior sculpture), then yes, you can use ComArt. I would recommend spraying a basecoat over your primer & then painting over the basecoat. I have used it with success for small indoor art pieces on aluminum panels that were then clearcoated. (Also have used it on wood.) Perfect example is a little piece I did that won a paint-off in 2008. Hope you don't mind me posting it. This is mostly ComArt with a little AA background. Sorry it's a bit funny looking, but the entire painting had to be done in only a few days & was on a tiny 3" x 6" piece of black aluminum panel.

There isn't really a reason why you shouldn't use Com-Art paint on metal. The important thing is the state of the surface you are painting on which I expect would be some kind of primer rather than bare metal anyway. If you like to work on paper of fine line board, like I always did previous to adopting Aluminium panels, you will need to get your prim,er/undercoat to a suitsbly smooth state by spraying it and then "Wet & Drying" it till there is no hint of "orange peel" effect. de grease the surface thoroughly with something like isopropyl alcohol also known as Isoproprynol sometimes and then use white gloves or similar to make sure you don't put any back whilst resting on the surface whilst brushing. Afterwards it will need protection as the paint will be sat on the surface rather than in it, like it would with paper and will scratch incredibly easily. Other threads on these forums will give you information as to what laquers work well etc

There's no reason it shouldn't work, but I would check the lightfastness ratings on the different colors first, then spray out a test panel before using it on the real thing.
It'd be a shame to put ann that work in just to have in get sun-bleached or react with the clear.
