Is there any iridescent paints, you know, the ones that shimmer in various colors depending on the angle to the light available for airbrushes? My first attempt is (small but important area) going to rely on them to get it right.

Thanks!

every paint manufacturer I can think of offers some. Xotic, Matrix, Kustom Shop, HoK, PPG, BASF, they all have "chameleon" paints available.
For use with an airbrush, I'd recommend buying some dry pearl powder and mixing it with some intercoat clear. Over a black base, 2-3 misting coats should be all you need. Depending on the brand, after that you'll either be dulling the effect or just wasting money.
Every brand has thier own name for thier products, but look for key words like "interference", "flop","color shift", etc.
Because of the pearl, you'll have to use a larger nozzled airbrush, so mask off and use frisket, liquid frisket, etc for details

Thanks draggin81, I'll look into getting some from HoK when I order the kandies
from them. Ever use any of the pre-mixed pearls before?

My AB has a .3 mm nozzle/needle, need to go larger than that for the pearl powders?

Check on the HoK website. There should be a link to there Tech manual. From there just look up the product number and check the sheet. Almost all of them give a suggested tip sive for an HVLP, a conventional gun, and an airbrush.
I've shot pearls through .3's before with no problem, and shot other ones through a .7 and got nothing but clogging. It just depends on what brand you're using.
I've never tried the HoK dry pearls, so I'm not sure how that will work out. Kustom Shop (TCP Global) has tons of colors of pearls and flakes and you can spefify the size, anywhere from "need a microscope" to "bass boat".

I used to buy the pre-mixed pearls and flakes, but soon realized that for the most part, thats just a waste of money. Plus by adding the pearls and flakes yourself, you have better control over the final effect (after a little expirimenting, of course).
Sometimes, though, pre-mixed is the better way to go. It just depends on the project.
I forgot to mention Jaquard for pearls and flakes in my last post. You can get them from Innate.com and they're very reasonably priced. E'Tac also sells dry micro-pearl, macro-pearl, "voodoo powder", interference red, and interference blue.

flip flops, chameleons, mystic, interference, etc, etc, etc.
Anyone know if there is an actual, proper name for them, or is it just whatever the company decides to call it?
