I have a cabinette that I am refurbishing. I need to sand it down to get the surface nice. My wquestion is: do I need to use anything special when painting over the wood to use AA? Will it be okay to clearcoat it too? I plan on using a wood primer. Any help?

How big is the cab? You going to paint a whole cabinet with AA paint or just the art? I would prime, then use either AA sealer dark or light whichever will match your base then the AA basecoat. I've never used automotive clear on wood before but I believe Whit said he might have cleared some signs with it before. I think I would do a test piece and see if the AA paint will hold onto the wood primer before you get to far. When I paint signs I always use an oil based primer under my waterbourne paints. MP

Never used AA on wood...But have painted bare wood with goldens and cleared with Uro's..

Have also done the prime route, then paint and clear....Just none with AA so dunno how much help that is..lol

whats the CURRENT finish? and what kind of material..
WOOD, in big panels shrinks and grows with seasons and humidity.. Plywood does not near as bad..
now whats the CURRENT finish? a genuine poly or varnish type, maybe if its old a lacquer? hopefully its NOT oil.
if its poly/varnish, then you got wax to contend with, so a 'wax remover' is needed.
if its shiny, then I would find a product called 'Liquid Sandpaper' and apply- this cuts the gloss and gives tooth to the primer.. and which in this case I would consider an automotive type primer/sealer, AFTER busting that glaze.

if you got one of the new fake shiny that plastic, then a little sand, and use the automotive plastic bumper adhesion promoter (Bulldog is one example) and READ THE INSTRUCTIONS THOROUGHLY.. you got a VERY limited window to spray your primer on top.

bare wood? EWW... sanding sealer on top the wood, sanded between coats.. and then primer on top.
