Here a small painting I did in 4 hours on a 5'' wide x 7'' high plastic laminate panel sample using Auto Air black and white paints. I wanted to do a small portrait while using my Iwata Micron airbrushes. I'm using AA piants because I want to paint very detailed work on some helmets and this was a practice piece to see how it would work out.
Here I use some paper for my positive and negative mask to get the main facial features lined up. This is a quick way to work and an easy one also.
Like I said in a previous post, I'm looking to do some theme motorcycle helmets and I need to be able to work the details like I'm used to.
Another thanks to Clinton for all his guidance on the AA paint!!!
Oh, and for those that did not know, I'm a big big NASCAR fan!

great job!!! What kind of paper did you use? What is holding it on? I was asked to do a picture on a helmet and wasn't sure the best way to transfer the image on there. This might work this way.

Thanks....I'm using standard printing paper and I'm holding it on with a paper clip...See first pic! You have to use low pressure to lay down some paint and I also hold it with my hands to prevent it from being lifted by the air.

very nice as usual Luc...always enjoy seeing what you do next!...Thanks for showin:clapping2:

Great work Luc, see Auto Air works and even through a Micron. :clapping2:
If your going to use this method on a helmet just make sure to spray straight on and the air pressure will hold the stencel to your work. This is how I do 90% of my work and the latest helmet is exactly this method, I just worked from my own sketches.:)

Hi Luc
You know I am going to be honest and I have to say this isn't your best. You have set a very high standard and I understand it's a practice piece for the use of AA. Your obviously handling the paint very well as you can see from the hair and the left eye (as you look at the pick, his right). But and there always is one, the centre line on his forehead is off, going by the reference pic it's almost dead straight vertical. It was the first thing that jumped out at me. Given the time taken it's a great piece, but you are always asking for criticism.
Took the liberty of doing a wee bit of photshop to illustrate my point, hope you don't mind.
Yep, you’re right!! ...Hadn’t noticed.
Thanks for pointing this out, that’s an easy fix to do.

LucNice piece Luc. I wish I had half your talent. Sorry to go off topic here, but if you're ever in my neck of the woods, look me up and I'll set it up for you to drive an actual NASCAR racecar at either Atlanta Motor Speedway or Talledega. One of my corporate accounts runs a racing school, and they buy up last years Nextel Cup cars for use in this year's school. I can pretty much drive anytime I want, and can usually bring a friend.
Driving is a blast, and if you think you're a NASCAR fan now, once you've actually driven one of those cars at 180 mph you'll be hooked for life.
PS, do a portrait of Dale Jarrett and bring it with you.

Nice work, Luc!
Ron, if Luc isn't interested, I am. Gonna do a DJ asap. Like him anyway, so that would be fun......
Hi Luc,
I’m also trying out AA’s for the first time, had some problems with it but it”s improving.
You mentioned that you are using your Micron,at what percent are you reducing your Auto Air white, and what are you using as a reducer???
BTW,I like your stuff!!
Thanks,
Rob

Thanks Sharon but you have to OVER reduce it!! I still get tip fry but I keep picking at my needle with my free hand as I paint so I always have a clean needle...well always! By the way, white is the worst to get working right because the color pigments are bigger.

Man O Man Bigwater!!! Thank you for the offer!! I will take good note of this! You are a lucky guy!!!....and now I'm very jealous! LOL
Who knows, one day I might show up at you door step! LOL
In 1997, I went to Loudon for a Nascar race and I met Jeff Gordon in person. Had a VIP pass to the Dupont tent. I even raced him on a simulator. That was a blast!
Thanks again Bigwater, that is very nice of you.

Hi Rob, I over reduce the AA paint to get it to flow thru the Micron to about a ration of 1:1. Depends on the color. Play around with the pressure also. With that ratio, you have to apply in very thin coats. This is good because this allows you to build your subject.
The reducer I use is a mixture of H2O and Fantastic house cleaner mixed to a ration of 1:1.
Just be patient!! When I started, I would never have believed that I would get the AA paint thru a Micron.
Good Luck
Luc
