I've been asked to repaint a couple of bike tanks for a guy at work, they're off a Suzuki and they're a bright blue Candy colour. As they both have some localised dents I'm gonna repair them first and then repaint them both. What I need to know is do I treat the Candy like a clear coat and put hardener into it?, or do I treat it like a base and just thin it out with thinners?. I intend putting a couple of coats of clear on afterwards to give it some protection(which is more than Suzuki did!).

I'm presuming with the candy that the more coats you put on the darker it will get is this right?.

Secondly is it ok to put clear over the top of stickers?, the bike has a couple of stickers that he says he can't afford to replace so I'll have to paint around them.

Thanks for any help.

Candee paint is sprayed just like a clear coat and does require hardener, and the more coats that you put on, the darker it will get, just be carefull when spraying and make sure your overlap pattern is near perfect, otherwise it will appear to have i guess a zebra stripe looking affect to it with dark and light lines, as for the stickers, for the most part you should be able to spray over them, ive done it before, hope that helps.

To keep from the stripes mentioned,, just
alternate your coats from horizontal,, one
coat,, verticle,, second coat,, etc.,, etc. !!!
Depending on coats,,, might even thro a
couple a diagonals in there !!!
Good Luck on it !!!:partyalone:

Thanks guys, if I have to put hardener in it then will I have to put the laquer on before the candy 'goes off'?. I dont want to end up with adhesion problems.

You got it Tomcat.........Painting with candy is the same as clear (laq as you say)...All windows stay the same....treat it like a normal clear job...Just some of the coats are colored clear is all.

Thanks again to you guys, I'm now a nervous wreck, I need the experience of working with Candy as I haven't used it before. However I'm scared to death of screwing up the job as the paint was really hard to get hold of. This will either make or break my painting career,Lol....

Tomcat, I'm with Sharon, try a small (even very small) test pieces before hitting the work. As for hardener in Candy? I don't understand, but usually Candy is suspended in an intercoating clear, and doesn't need a catalyst, if that's what you mean. Just make sure you put it over a base and good clearcoat so it doesn't "sink" into the background color...... lots to learn here.

I know what ya mean BD..It's a detail kinda left out that i was thinking was kinda implied..(but maybe not)

Kandy needs a binder..Either Intercoat which doesn't require a Hardener...Or a normal clear mix...Regular Clear mixed with Cat (as the norm) then add Kandy to tint.

If i'm doing a full coverage, I like to use regular Clear coat...because of the strength it has....If i'm just tinting/shading artwork with Kandy i'll use the Intercoat......it wont be a heavy build, so no worries...It may work for full coverage also, I just never tried....(better safe than sorry)

Just a detail that may have been left out or misunderstood...That's what i took from the situation anyway...Make any sense??

Er????, what?????

Sorry but you both lost me there, the stuff has come from a bike paint supplier, I was told it needed a silver base coat(which I bought localy), and I was going to put a clear coat on it afterwards. As far as I know I dont need to add anything to the candy as its pre mixed, I was just wondering if it needed hardener adding or if it would just go off by itself?. I suppose the only way to be sure is to do a test piece as you have suggested, this is sure gonna be a steep learning curve though.

I could do with getting myself onto a course for paintwork, this would help fill some of the obviously gaping holes in my paint knowledge, lol.

Sorry TC...More left out details..........I was reffering to what i use..KK..(Kandy Konentrate) (however ya spell it?)..It's Kandy in pure form and needs to be mixed as i stated above..

......The stuff you have may very well have a binder premixed and only require a hardner to work....Or it may be mixed with Intercoat and not require a hardner...I don't know what stuff yer using?

..So no answers still??...Lotta help i am...Sorry Man

now this is an interesting topic.
i love spraying candies, although at first it is intimidating due to its sensitive as a rats butt. umm never mind on that but anyways, tiger stripe is easy to do with it.. i did the up n down and parrallel n overlap 75% crap even and etc. found out the gun i was using spraying much wider than what im typically used to, i switched guns and it solved my problem. i even dropped down from overlapping 75% to 50% and some reason it works spraying 50% with this certain gun i have. its all finding out what works with you..
treat it as a clear but yet its different than a clear.
i use hok intercoats for my candies. it doesn't consist of any catalyst/hardner, but if i was playing around before a big job, i'd practice with some AA candies, its cheaper.
but i never had to do that, i just went straight using Intercoat, if it didn't do right, . i typically do light light coats and work my way to medium, after the first couple times its easier to do than just laying down a medium coat n your screwed.
so try doing light coats and build them up to your tint hue. cause it gets darker as you keep laying it.
topcoat clear, makes it pop. brings the base under the candy out big time..

be sure you have your caffene or music up blarin or whatever you need to keep you prolonged when you spraying candies cause its an extra coat of paint, ur going need something to keep you from getting fatigue and make sure you dont do this like int he evening either. u'll be stuck at nighttime , unless you have an enclosed shop. where night air isn't an issue.

i went in the first time with a frame of mind.. if anybody else is shooting it.. i sure can. go positive, :party-smiley-042:

Yup I did see the site, cheers. I tried to look up the bike but I never got told what model it was, I tried a few different ones and they do list a candy blue for the suzuki's. The price was a bit of a shock too $100 for a pint?, jeez thats nigh on £50, I can get a litre of it over here for the same price!.

Edit......*sigh* just to add insult to injury I've managed to break my compressor tonight so I can't spray anything until I replace it, I'm begging to think someone has got it in for me....

Well after borrowing a compressor off a friend and speaking to the guy who supplied the paint I'm all sorted. The paint needs to be thinned 2-1 and then just sprayed on like a base coat(few), so in a sense its just like a transparent pearl rather than a proper Candy.

But ya only have to use a hardner if ya aplying it as a 'base'color? (the whole surface of a car for instance)
I sprayed KBC once & it was VERY elastic! So I can imagine a binder is the better option...

Or is this a must in makin true fire as well? Couse I never heard of it...
