I'm in the garage and getting ready to clear my tins for my bike. I figured I would hit AirbrushTech to see if I can get a quick answer. I seem to have a problem with static. How can I ground these parts? Heck the tins look like peaches! It only comes off with tape but then it reappears. If I would clean it with degreaser and a rag or a tack cloth more fuzz gets on it. With the semi ruff finish of Auto Air colors when I clean the surface even with "lint free" rags I get lint on the tins. Maybe what I'll do is give it another coat of Transparent Base and then clear it. Whata think??? Any ideas how to get rid of the static though??? Thanks much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:angry-smiley-030:

Not sure on tins Harley. but on a complete I allways hung a chain from the frame to the ground. it worked great. Not real sure how You,d do that without causing Ya more problems. But if Ya can wire the parts together & run a chain from the last piece that wont have to be turned or move it should work. Good Luck. Cowboy

Well good luck Harley. lookin forward to seein them done. A fella I know of Mine said He used those static cling dryer sheets & wiped em off with them, Just dont use the scented ones & He said it worked great, But I think I,d still havta rewipe just to be sure. Cowboy
Always had that prob on plastic sign faces,,,
kept a wire with aligator clips on each end
just for that purpose !!!
Good Luck on it !!!:partyalone:
I've had major static probs from time to time...Plastic, Metal doesn't seem to discriminate.....I've seen some electric charge thingy you can buy..Supposed to prevent it.(i dunno)
...I just go old skool..Static means dry air right..What do you need for dry air..Moisture, humidity........Best i've found is soak down the floor the whole time i'm in there....Before i clear the part i poor water over it in a steady stream from the hose...don't dry by hand cuz you bring the static back....I just crank up the air pressure and blast it dry.....Only way i've combated it...Just an idea.

You're going to think I'm crazy, but this works. Honest it does.
Pick up a piece of magnetic sheeting like you see magnetic signs on automobile doors made on. You can get it from almost any sign shop or sign supply company. Get a sheet at least as large or larger than anything you ever want to eliminate static from.
Place whatever you are trying to eliminate static from on top of the magnetic sheet. The magnetic charge will reduce the static charge to zero. I use this all the time in the sign business where static builds up on material in the cutter or in the application tape.
It works!

Wow, great tips here guys!
Another is to use a water based post sanding cleaner, like HOK's KC-20. Water based and clean, it makes static vanish. Not sure I have the right numbers, its something like that.

another tip I have learned when trying to stripe fiberglass or plaseic is to take a damp rag and lightly wipe the back side of the surface. This will remove the current static charge. You may need to do this after each coat as the movement of the air and paint will cause it to rebuild a charge over time.

Thanks everyone!!! These are great idea's and I plan on using them all at one time or another to find out which one works best for my application(s). I was able to get the clear on and pinstripe the silver metal flake stripe but I screwed up the Xcalibre brush before I started the flames. I tried to trim a couple of strays and took a chunk out of it. Now I have to wait until the new one comes in the mail. Oh well...live and learn!
