Ooooo nice, is that a GTO?, watched the episode of 'Overhaulin' where they did a GTO convertible for Lance Armstrong, man that was a nice car. I'd love a classic 67 mustang but even nasty ones are fetching riddiculous money over here,(try $20-$30,000 for one in need of resto)

you need a paint called POR-15

its a great primer type stuff, BUT, will NOT hold onto bare metal, must be rusty.

do a web search for someone near you, you cannot spray it, must be brushed..however, its highly recommended for 'rusty steel, like inside the trunk and floor areas..
they make other versions.. as well.

Im replacing the body panels and then Im gonna brace the heck out of the body with 1x1 tubing and pull it from the frame and send it in to be chemical cleaned befor I do any final body work, Taking it all the way back to metal and then sealing it with epoxy. Then Ill start my body filler and final blocking and sanding. Also gonna media blast the frame too.

Corey ,

You may want to consider doing the bracing and stripping before changing the panels. It is MUCH easier to attach to clean metal and after it is stripped you may find areas that need work that you did not see. No since having to repair an area more than once.
Also if you are doing the dip type strip make sure it is throughly rinced as the chemical can and will hide in seams only to seep out later.

You may want toi explore using a media blaster type service instead.

I dip all my removable parts but my stripper, I mean the guy that does my dipping only has a tank big enough for hoods and fenders. Where do you get your cars dipped?

corey
03-27-2007, 04:58 PM
A compant here in omaha called premiere media stripping. The have a tank big enough to put the main body of a 53 caddy in. When its done stripping they take it through 3 different rinse tanks and then bake dry it in a booth. Its expensive as hell but i think its worth it. He gave me some stripper to use around the areas im replacing that way i can get to metal without a bunch of sanding and grinding.

Hey Corey
Are ya still gonna dip the whole car? I was thinkin about takin my 66 GT up there. What's the average cost for a whole car. My guy charges about $60 a part but doesn't do a whole car. If you don't dip it let me know. You can come out and I'll show ya that pressure washer and sand set up.

I have seen worse. You do have a lot of work ahead of you. Is it a restoration or a customizing project? Have you ever done this kind of work before? 15 years of bodywork and the first time I did something like replacing a quarter I did it up on jack stands. Big mistake!! You need to get that car back on its wheels before making that panel permanet

corey
04-19-2007, 05:22 AM
Ive done this several times before. The reason its on a stand is so I could fit the outer wheel well and to get at the spot welds in the fender well to the rocker panel. The wheel is back on and Ill be moving forward this week. waiting on a taillight panel and a few other parts.

Good! I ended up with a way off gap between door and quarter panel. I had it painted before I realized it. Had to cut the panel move sheet metal and fill the cut area with metal and welded it. That was many years ago. 1976. Man memories

corey
04-19-2007, 01:14 PM
Right now the drivers door hinge has a half inch sag in it. Ill need to either replace it or shim the bottem to bring it up. It was that way before i pulled the quarter and fitted the new one, so I had to mark the door with the alignment. When I lift the door to the right hight my gaps are perfect. But Im also replacing the door skins too. Ill have a few days off work next week so Ill get some more done. Need to get my CO2 filled for my welder as well so I can hit a couple of tac welds to temporairilly hold it

corey
09-22-2007, 07:42 PM
Heres what I did today. I got a good jump on replacing the tailight panel and tommarow Ill weld it in place and start tearing off the other quarter panel and wheel well.

Ya had to say it didnt ya. I found a real bad rotten spot in the passenger side shock tower so I jumped on summit this morning and ordered a tower patch. So Ill be waiting to weld the tail light panel in place to make it easier to get into the trunk and fix the tower. It looked solid untol i threw a wrench in there and it knocked the rust away.:sad-smiley-068: Still gonna start tearing out the other quarter though.

Nothing like an old project car. lol. She's gonna be a beauty. I have found that projects like these are only "done" when you sell the car (usually to get a new beater to fix up).
A buddy of mine has an old Monza we're going to do some work on this winter. The engine is already pretty well built up, and has a brand new tranny, so it'll pretty much just be bodywork. Right now it's that ugly faded greyish with orange and brown stripes. Ugh. We'll have it lookin right by summer, though ;-)

Ive got parts stacked damn near to the ceiling waiting to get put in place though. Fenders door skins floor panels. New seats elctric window and lock kits along with door poppers and a trunk popper. New wiring harness been sitting over in the corner waiting to go in.

I got to say that when I saw the first pics I thought "this guys got to set up an account at Goodmark " .And I see you have. !! The grill and side gills set Pontiacs apart from the everybodys got one Camero. And the dashes are cool too. But what about the motor, going to stick with the 326. Lets face it if going to look the part it needs to run the part. My recipe for desaster is this, warmed up 400 ,super 10, 373s in a spooled 12 bolt . MMM good chicken!!!

Building a 400

Gonna take it to a 4.155 bore with a 4.25 stroker kit.
Flat top forged pistons
255/266 @ .50 cam with a .594/.587 lift with 1.65:1 rockers
Going with ported heads and larger exhaust valves
Porting out a weind intake with a 750 double pump holley
This should bring me at around 9:1 compression and still be able to run on pump gas without any problems. Running somewhere around 12 in the quarter.

flat screwd
10-08-2008, 10:17 PM
Right on. The bore and stroke numbers are Oldsmobile numbers you should be around 461 inches . With the right converter and 300 ponies to the pavment you will. I dont know the cc values of pontiac heads but with that bore stroke combo with flat top you will be higher than 9 to 1. Any how bitchen car keep the pics. coming.

Nice.
Not too much rust in the trunk, so it looks like you have a pretty solid base to start with.
I buy a lot of resto parts from YearOne (http://www.yearone.com/)

That era cars hinges were usually sloppy. Mostly because the doors were real heavy. Your best bet is to just replace the hinges.

You have a good set up there. She just needs a little care and time and she'll be a beauty.

Well thought Id give a little update. I am currently waiting on a few more parts for the body. I opted not to try to rebuild the passenger door this time out. It is in way worse shape than the drivers. So as i wait I decided to start tackling the floors. Well now Im on hold for these because I did find that my passenger rocker is in need of replacement. At first glance it seemed to be okay but when i started to remove the seat tower I noticed a small bubble. I grabbed my wire wheel and started to strip the paint from that section. Only to find it starting to literally fall apart. The metal was so thin it was just turning to dust. So as Im on hold with the body I am going to move onto pulling the engine and tranny out. Should be pretty easy from here because i can bring it straight out the front of the car. Front clip is only held on by a few bolts at this time.

Wow been a while since I really could do much on the bird. I have gotten a chance to do some work on it lately though. I had to replace the right outer rocker. in doing so i ordered the part from a different supplier and to say at the least im not impressed. Besides for the fact that I ordered a full outer rocker and they sent me a patch panel, the thing was a inch too long and the bends werent right. being the way i am I made lemonade from lemons and made it work. I had to do a 4 foot long butt weld instead of just spot welding it in because it didnt have the right top bends on it. then i was finally able to get the right quarter on the car. Next i dropped the gas tank and started patching a rust hole in the trunk. Once I am finished welding in the new metal I can finally get the tail panel welded into place and start filling and blocking the body. I have told myself I will have this car ready to paint this spring.
