Got a job coming up. Its a harley the back fender. This bike has all sorts of custom work already done to it. He wants me to do some lettering on the back fender.
Qusetion, I know matching clear is impossible how am I suppose to strip all the clear off take away the shine and not hurt the other art work?
Todd, don't strip off the clear, just give it a scuff with #600 to knock the shine off, do your lettering, then reclear. That should take care of it. Just watch for sharp edges and angles.
With Norm there.....As long as the old clear is holding strong, No chips and such, it's your friend!!..hahaa....Wipe it down with a good degreaser, sand it so it has zero shine left to it. Wipe it down again and get to sprayin.

Wet or dry when sanding?
No matter.....Wetsanding keeps the paper from loading up and no dust....But you can't see how much your sanding until you dry the section...So if you go wet, stop and dry the part a lot to check progress.

+1 for dry. I prefer vaccuming up a bit of dust, to the mess that wet sanding especially primers leaves behind. Dry is better as you can see exactly what you are doing which is important on shapes and tight curves

I wet sand and use a black putty spreader to squeegie the water off. Dry sand body work and wet sand on paint, just my opinion. I'm with Dell, dry clogs the paper and creates too much dust for my liking. Ya seem to have to drink more to wash that dust out. The guy I'm workin with now likes dry sanding so it's really a matter of opinion.
