Hi gang. Thought I would touch base with the forum to let everyone know I'm still kicking. Even though yesterday I got kicked twice. First, my camera of 5 years took a crap, second kick was going to work and being told I have to go back to dayshift. I hate dayshift with a passion.
Any way, I got a question. As some of you know, I am paintinga batting helmet for my grand daughter. I only have the zebra stripes to do yet. Paint is Golden acrylics. A body shop nearby said he would clear coat it when he does a car, he said no charge because there is always a little left over.
My question is, when you clearcoat a car, do you lay it on like painting? meaning, no mist coat first.
If there is no mist coat, when he does my helmet, will the heavier coat do anything to my art work.?
I'm thinking that if the Golden acrylic paint is cured, then it should be ok.

Hb did you scuff and Prime the helmets?
He should be able to do a mist coat. you'll have to ask him to do it.. I have done it when I use a water base
acrylic.. but that was on metal not plastic.. so Dell might be the one to know this one. or Mobb

Sharon, what I ended up doing was, clean the helmet, scuff it, then sprayed it with Krylon Fusion-the paint made for plastic.
Then I left the paint cure for 2 weeks. Then scuffed again.
I did some scratch tests with the Fusion paint and was impressed with it, not that I'm an expert or anything.

my worries would be how the clear reacts with the Krylon....most times i've seen auto clear wrinkles things out of a spray can.....The goldens should be fine...I use it a lot and my 1st coat of clear is pretty wet.. More than a dust coat, but not 100% wet/full coverage......Never cleared over the Fusion so can't say, but stuck to the rule spray cans and auto paint dont play well...(from experience back in the day) things very well could have changed.....if that's any help?..lol

Thanks for the info dell. Yes it did help and also gave me something to worry about. I should have asked before using the rattlecan paint. Oh well, we shall see. Don't worry about the part of giving me something to worry about, that was my bad. I know you wouldn't steer me wrong.
I gotta say, I'm coming along and learning on flat surfaces but doing a helmet is like almost like learning all over again. Even though its a cartoonish zebra face, its been a challenge from the start. I should never have taken on a project like this. Especialy my first helmet. I know that I have to push myself in order to get better but I think I pushed myself so hard that I may end up on my butt. LOL
As soon as i get another camera, I have 2 paintings to post and I'll throw in a pic of my zebra face.

I hope it works for ya Bill...just never had any luck myself, but as i said it was years ago since i tried...Spray can clear works fine over spray can colors..looks good for awhile, but doesnt compare to auto clear.
