I'm thinking I know what I did but I need to know for sure. I used a house of kolor base black. I have the aluminum auto air that I put over top and then used plastic wrap for the wrinkled finish. I used a heat gun to dry it so I could clear that night. I waited about an hour after I dried it with the heat gun and put about 3 coats of brandy wine candy on it. I then put 4 coats of clear over the helmet. The next day it had a bazillion are bubbles all through it. Very tiny. I'm thinking the water base wasn't dried enough. Had to be the water base trapped in the urethane . I am trying to switch to water base but I love how the urethane lays down and dries. No waiting at all flash dry and off to the next coat. Any info would be great.
Thanks
Dave

are they bubbles or are they pin holes? If it's bubbles then it's probably moisture atomising in your air supply, check your compressor for water build up in the tank, drain, etc etc. If it's pin holes then it's solvent pop, so you may have not let each coat of clear flash off long enough. Pay attention to the booth temp and speed of your reducer/hardener. String test for tack between coats, and let it flash well before the next coat goes on.

One thing I guarantee is that it will certainly not be damp waterbase paint, as that would cause a cloudy haze or bloom.

Thank you for the reply... They are bubbles and I will look into the possible moisture in the lines and tank. I have 3 water separators before my short 5' hose. could be an usury that I over looked.
Thank you
Dave.

Was always told you can put a waterbased over a Urethane but not the other way about, after the black base and then the AA aluminium would have sealed with the SG100 before applying the candy, as the urethane will react again with the waterbased AA without a barrier between them.

Does it count if I used the sg 100 to make my candy or just lay the sh 100 down first then go from there. Thank you for that info that is a great bit of info.
Thanks
Dave

Hmm good question, all I know is it is best to seal the waterbased paint, an that a lot of artists have found no probs using the SG as an intercoat over AA, now whether the addition of the candy dye/pigment affects the sealing I honestly don't know, do know if you don't get the mix right you will get "bleed" on the Kandies, so to be sure might be better to seal the AA off before doing anything else, just a thought.

there is no good reason i know of or have experianced why solvent base cannot be layed over waterbased and vise verse

the bubbles you speak of sound either like solvent pop due to trapped solvents or possibly boiling of the clearcoat ie you baked the clear to hot and or for way too long
