ironic, the two big projects I have are undersea themed, I'm working on the restaurant at night and bike during the day, they are totally seperate projects just sheer coincidence on the theme,

here are pics of the progress so far, this piece is the rear fender, lots more to add......

Gorgeous Jason, absolutely stunning. You nailed em. Loggerheads, right?

Hey, you ever see pics of a Leatherback? They're black, prehistoric looking things...things that get 1500 pounds or so HUGE.

the turtles are not very big, i did them with my bcs and a .5 needle/nozzle pushing the urethanes at 24 psi and very very thinned back

Hey man, what are charging for this -- if you don't mind me asking. Also, I guess it depends on how much of the bike you're covering, so fill me in on that as well. Keep it up dude!

I don't mind telling anyone how much i'm charging, feel free to ask anytime. This particular project has been painted sanded and cleaned for me by a bodyshop I recommended the client take it to first, then I do artwork, then it goes back for clear and polish. I have the tank, front fender, and 2 small side covers to go, and still adding lots to the rear fender, the customer is expecting between $1500.00 and $1800.00 for the final art bill, and i'm sure she's paying close to that at the body shop but i'm not sure, I know some things got shaved and worked smooth from the factory set.

The client is an artist herself and her son is a tattoo artist, she doesn't want to see any progress pics either, she wants a total finished surprise

I'm liking your colors and building of depth/dimension with the turtles.
Cool !

Hi Jason

Lovely work - really nice and subtle. Have you used masking at all on this or are the turtles all freehand? Also, did you spray the background, clear, wet flat and then paint the turtles or did you do them all on the same layer? What paints are they? Did I read somewhere you use PPG? Can't find where that might have been now.

Excellent work with a quality and feel I'd love to achieve with my airbrushing.

All the best - Grant

Hi Grant, The surface was painted black and cleared then sanded with 800 for me, then I used my PPG base coats to blend a nice underwater color, then found some reference turtles i liked and sized them to the size i wanted and printed them out on regular computer paper, basically like Luc and Clinton I cut out the outline shape of the turtle and sprayed very little, this is for compostision, from there on out it is free hand on the rest of it, very little time spraying, i spend more time getting the right consistancy to achieve my next step

here are some updates with the back fender, you'll see some white fish-shaped guys on there, well i just need to get them yellow and the fender will be close to done, as you can see these were done simply with a paper cut out, i'll post them again when i add color

thanks Lynne, most of my reference material is from about 25 library books, they have the best hi-res pics to get the best detail

04-24-2007, 06:36 PM
I hear that bro, I use my library card a lot also...between that and flickr, dreamstime, etc...so I gather a conglomerate of photo's and morph em into one. That way at least I stay semi-original....without blowing a wad on underwater cameras and a dive trip.
Keep it up man, you do us proud.

Jason, this is incredible work, some of the best I have seen anywhere. I am blown away, the perspectives, lighting angles, refraction, wow.......... If you don't put this in the Art Show I will have to send you another package, but this one will be ticking!

Its looking great man, thanks for the pricing info. I'm trying to find the right price balance for my area, of which there's a lot of interest in custom art but not so much in paying for it. I know you said once that its just you and one other guy in the area taking on all the custom stuff, so Im sure you have the demand and reputation but do you still run into the grunts who want everything for nothing?

jason prouty
04-24-2007, 09:34 PM
it's funny, i don't get those guys anymore, and i thinks it's because they know they have to pay, but i have a friend that is just starting out and he's already got heaps of people wanting cheap stuff, it seamsthey're still out there, i just never see them anymore,

plus i think it's somewhat psychological meaning if you play hard to get they want it more

Thanks for the info Jason

I've just booked in a Finding Nemo helmet which is going to be on similar lines - fading blue/turquoise background with the various characters laid over the top. Looking forward to doing it and would love to get a similar feel to what you've done here.
