I am about to help a friend by painting his cycle tank w/ the Norton logo on the side of the tank over either a white basecoat or chrome yellow. He wants me to paint the fire as though it were coming off the logo and extending over the top of the tank.It will be my first attempt using HOK.Can anyone give me some idea as if this will work on such a light basecoat and which colors I should start with, and do you know of any sites which show pics of this. Thanks Rickster

most fire is started with yellow, so I'd think you would start at your next step, the red or orange over the yellow and then build from there.
I haven't tried it yet, I always go back to a dark base due to frustration! lol!
get some panels and do some testing first. I came acrossed a pic of blue on white, the guy put down a very dark blue almost black base flame then went with his reg steps. I made an attempt at them, but they had no depth so I still gotta work on it.
Just do some practice panels, and if you get it, please do some pics! :)

Hey rick, Cant help Ya with Ab, pics. But Heres a killer reference pic that I found awhile back that might help Ya. Good luck.
Mix some red and black and paint smoke where you want your flames then do your flames as normal over the dark smoke.
I did a practice piece, not very good but shows you the idea.
Michael
Well, this might help. I did a truck for a friend awhile back that wasnt really somethingthat I was proud of, but its what he wanted. He was looking for a smoke look done like the realistic fire but only with a blue.

hey Rickster,
i would have to agree to Frog on this one. Traditional red/orange/yellow real fire looks TERRIBLE on white by itself. The candies sit on top of the white and end up looking very muddy, you could do your best fire ever, and it would look like garbage because of the white background.
So, first lay out a guide line of your flame path with a mixture of red kandy and black, mostly black, but the red kandy will come alive with the clear. Then start your layering process of orange fire shapes first, then kandy red, then fo back over it with orange, punching out more details, then kandy orange, and so on until you have your real fire layed out. But remember, keep ALL of your fire shapes and kandy coats only on the black /red base. The pictures attached show a couple projects I did a while back, and what happens if you don't do a darker base path for your fire to follow. if you need any other pointers, just email me at mobdesign33@hotmail.com
Later, and good luck! Keep on sprayin'

Ok I,ll try this again. But Now I Dont Remember the Guys name who did this or the link to His website that I posted Yesterday & was then lost. But this is the Best I,ve seen. On silver base.
Thats the picture that made me do my practice piece. I think that is the most effective fire I have seen.

Have to agree, Pat's realistic fire on the silver base is off the wall.
Although it is a tough call to say it is on a lighter base as the smoke is so dark you could almost say that it does have a black base.
Who cares, it's still an awesome job.

Start with a Molly Orange "map"; be very loose with it.
Kandy Apple Red tinting
Molly Orange w/shields
Chrome Yellow licks w/shields
Chrome Yellow fill in
Pagan Gold tinting
Chrome Yellow details w/shield
Kandy Tangerine tinting
Primrose Yellow highlights
Primrose Yellow mist
Kandy Apple Red edges
Purple Passion Pearl outline
Dark to light; loose to tight.
Work fast, not slow and it'll look better
Don't rely solely on the stencils to build the licks; do freehand also
Remember hard edge/soft edge
Some flames are transparent; some are more solid
Paint what you see, not what you "know"
Wear a respirator
Clean your AB; clean it again and again when you think it's clean.
