ok, everywhere I get paint, someone's trying to sell me waterbased and the only reason they all give is because everyone else is using it. Well... if everyone in my town starts smokin crack I'm rackin my shotgun.
I have been using PPG basecoats for the past 8-9 years and before that I used lacquers. I don't clear my own stuff, and I work with 15-20 different body shops and custom shops around town. they're all used to what I've been using (basically same as them)
Please I only want to hear from the folks that have used basecoats prior to waterbased and what made them switch.

LOL Jason, I agree. I have tried a few and I am an auto paint guy, Uro's all the way. I use HOK, but only because of lack of access to PPG. Gonna give em a try soon, there is a new jobber near me and I want to go talk to him.
The water based thing is cool, I just don't know enough about it it I guess. I have enough trouble laying down good paint, I hear so much on tip-dry, slow paint dry time, etc,. Besides, I have a large inventory of HOK!
Ooops sorry, wasn't supposed to answer, just had to agree with your thoughts.

man, I thought I was the only one. I'm sure one day we'll all be converts when the world only lets us shoot colored water.

My first post here, but I will jump in on this one.Started shooting paint on Tees and customized vans back in 77.Used actual screen printing inks on both, untill they started making stuff I could get my hands on.Sprayed laqs for years and switched to PPG after some trys with Dupont.I love my DBC but had a pretty serious heart attack recently and can't really function with a respirator on anymore. After hearing some other opinions and doing some testing myself,I am making the switch to E'tac for my airbrushing.Since I am now using other locals for base and clear work,I don't think it will be that big a prob.Kinda nice to be able to use the same stuff for tags and Harleys.

Does anyone remember all of the cars and trucks from the 80's and early 90's with the paint that peeled off in sheets? Can you say waterborne paints & primers? After custom painting for over 15 yrs I have never used waterborne paints that seemed to hold on to the substrate well without the risk of peeling off when masked over.

Overspray, welcome to the forum! Drop by the Introduce Yourself and say hello. I would love to hear your review of the Etac paint. I am expecting some X-Otic paint this week and will post a review..

I have tried them (only because they were free) and I hated them. They're not as vivid and I really don't have time for them to dry or to put on what seems like 40 light coats. I am sticking to my HoK urethanes until something better comes along.

Pepe, was that Etac or X-Otic you didn't like?

Sorry for the confusion. I used "Auto Air" and it was very disappointing. I can't comment on Etac or Xotic as I have never used them. I would like to move away from the solvent based stuff if I found a "non-toxic" paint that was up to my standards. I would love to hear about the Xotic and Etac paints. I wasn't aware (I live under a rock) that they were water based.

Actually I think the Etac is water based, but the Xotic is Eurethane. I will keep you posted....

I was at a seminer lead by Jon Kosmoski and he warned that water born paints are coming and that the EPA is soon (a couple years) gonna ban all non water born paints. HOK is said to be working on a H20 based paint now. I guess it is something tha twe will have to grow into kinda like when we switched away from lacquers back in the day........

Water bourne and water based are two different things. Not really sure what the differences all are though. As the law stands right now, anybody who can pay for it can buy paints at any body shop supply store but that's going to change at some point soon so that only licenced body shops will be able to get them. That's just what I heard. If somebody can get a water based paint to behave like a solvent based paint I am all ears.
