i have a box of packing paper that i use sometimes just to blast ideas stuff out on. you can get it at moving supply places. i get mine at a big storage unit place that sells packing boxes. it's basically newspaper that hasn't been printed on. it's cheap enough and it's big.

paper towels are great for learning works like a t-shirt just place the roll at the top of your board..paint away..tear off and start a new one.

If you have a local Newspaper (scarce nowdays)
and ask for "Endrolls" !!! That's the roll paper
they print newspaper on,,, too short to work
in their presses but still mabye 500 foot left on
the roll,,, makes great fireplace fodder but has
an awful lot of paper to play with in between !!!
They'll probably give it to you as well !!!
Good Luck on it !!!

Ron,
As a newbie as well what I use for practice is as suggested paper towel. I recently went to the local fabric store and bought a few yards of Pellon. It is used in crafts as a backer material. It is good to simulate t-shirts and can be used to to display designs if you go the t-shirt artist route. I mounted a roll above my easel and just pull paint and rip. I also use newsprint paper purchased cheaply form Micheals craft store. another source if you do not have a local news paper.

I was in Sams Club today, (in Canada probably Costco?) and they had nice white paper rolls in the commercial cooking section, for table coverings, dense brite white paper, 18" wide x 1000' long for about 20 bucks. I'm gonna buy one, for practicing....

I get "Butcher" paper here for sign patterns,,,
got two sizes we use,,, 24" and 48" on a roll !!!
Local butchers will sell just the paper if asked !!!
Good 20lb white,,, great stuff !!!

LOL, Whit, it was probably butcher paper I saw, my excuse? I was in a big hurrY! Honest!!!!

Jerzee, the only issue is you can practice technique, but on brown paper its gonna be a little tought to experiment with color combos, etc.
