hi guys and gals. i need a little help with a paint / airbrushing technique. i'd like to hear some ideas or how to's about painting a CONCRETE effect. i've seen some examples on other sites that looks like they start with a grey base and then spackle black and white dots over it. let me know what you think. thanks

Welcome to the group. Wait until Steelhorse sees this. He is big on stone effect and will no doubt give plenty of suggestions. New at it myself so I don't want to give bad advice.

Welcome to the board !!!
Have you experimented with the
tuts you've seen so far ???
Most tuts are merely the beginning
of what can be accomplished by
utilizing the instruction and adding
your own personal touch !!!

Hey Shawn!!!! I found a few pics that will help ya. The first one is a close up of how to hold the airbrush on a paint stick, ice-cream spoon etc!!! The further back ya get the larger the splatter and vise-versa!!! I shoot at around 35 psi when doing this.

The second pic shows me testing the splatter and how far away I am. Try this method and see how it works out for ya. A few tips....start with a black background....splatter with the white, then come in with black and do the same. Move in circular patterns so that you don't fill an area too much. Keep....I repeat...keep moving the whole time. Also, every 5-7 seconds, wipe the stick off or you will get a big SPITTER BLOB!!! hehehehee. Have fun experimenting with this and look at all the granite /concrete pic's that you have seen and try and break it down. Pic 3 shows the white and the black splatter effect

I am a newbie like you and still trying to accomplish a final piece......concerning the cracks.....I did these by ripping paper apart and positioning them as a shield....no free hand involved.....rip and use the paper as a stencil.
I hope this has helped ya....And, I also hope that you are not too let down....I am not as good as my friends say! LOL But, we all learn from each other here and that's what make's this place so great!!!! Steel

thanks steel, i didn't know that using a paintstick etc. on the end of an airbrush would produce that affect. very cool to know. i'm not really a newbie though, ive been custom painting for about 11 years now. i'm more of an graphic airbrusher than a mural artist. i mainly use the airbrush for flame outlines, ghost flames, stencils, shadowing, etc. i started out painting autos then switched to custom houseboats and now strictly motorcycles. here is a pic of one of my latest jobs.

Aloha Shawn,
Glad 2 have ya here... To create a stone effect, hold UR gun aprox. 6 inches from the surface UR painting on & place UR thumb nail or another object in front of the nozzle of UR gun & shoot (experiment w/ distance & air flow) this will create an stippling effect, shaddowing is important as well to create depth... It's a cool technique & simple... -HotAir-
