I think that's when I did this piece. Might have been 1979. I was going through an old box of framed prints looking for a Christmas print, came across this ol' one from way back. I only had a VL then, so I know what I used. Probably Dr. Martins watercolors, I was using a Nitrogen cylinder for air, all I could afford.

I have been a big drag racing fan all my life. I took the pic in Seattle that year, then came home and painted the pic. Don'tcha just love the 80's lettering, LOL.... anyway, for you guys starting out, this is my past, I think this was one of the earlier pieces (after practice) I ever did. Notice how I hid the motor detail with lots of "clutch dust", LOL.....

Excuse the glare, for some crazy reason, its glassed in a frame (but mercifully tucked away in a box). Maybe I'll hang it in the shop for laughs.......:wink2:

Scott,
Why would you consider this something to laugh at? I would be proud to have that hanging in my garage....I think I might have a panel that I did in about 81. It was a test panel we had to do it auto body paint class. That is when I bought my brush it was the VL that I got back out to restart my brushing career....That might be a good thread I will dig it out. Everyone post a pic of your earliest work:rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

Tim, only meant I was laughing at how long ago that was! The piece is pretty dated (26 years ago is half of my lifetime), that circular lettering is damn funny to me now, though the piece is OK overall. I suppose at the time I probably thought it was pretty cool, LOL. Just chuckling at the flashback more than anything. Earliest piece I could find still left, have travelled so far, not many bits left.... I would love to see your stuff too, great idea for a thread!

Just a year after that I used a VL, # 3 needle/nozzle set and did something I have never heard of since. I was working in the art department of a major porcelain enamel graphics company in Vancouver, Canada. We had to make a porcelain sign with curved surfaces, for the "Honey I Shrunk the Kids" attraction at Disney World. I hand cut the entire artwork in frisket, and we made a slip of porcelain (frit & oxide) and I airbrushed the whole graphic on the blue porcelain background. Talk about dry tip, I think I went through three needles and nozzles doing that one piece. The frit was so abrasive, I remember spraying for 30 seconds at a time, then cleaning the entire gun. The slip was white porcelain slip and after airbrushing, was fired into the background in our kiln. (It was intended to look like a curled up blueprint). The sign is still in use at the attraction in Orlando.....

Whit, LOL, yep I remember Gene Snow's dodge funny cars and gassers. This was just after his Amalie oil company hit it big, he bragged to me once about bending the rods on every run (about 10K a set) and he didn't care! Must've been nice!

I really like this. At first I also didnt understand the laughs part but I get it now. I would have just assumed this was a poster or something from a magazine. This would look great in any shop and for such an early work, I think you nailed it perfectly.

Thanks Mongoose, it is an old piece of my work. I laugh everytime I see it, as I put up the brush for about 20+ years, and when I came across it, it was kinda like, oh yeah, I used to really love this stuff, that's where it comes from, LOL.
