Real nice work:roll1: I have a Raptor 50 what kind of painted did you use and did use liquid mask or just masking tape.
mappy41
11-12-2007, 12:14 AM
all of the canopies were painted using urethane paints. I used mostly masking tapes for the lines and handheld masks for the designs.

Great designs... and I'd like to ask, for the eagle design that you did, did you use a stencil for the feathers on that. Once I saw it it brought to mind how that could be used in what I may do. BTW still new to this, so that was something that clicked in my head for me.
Good looking stuff!

Thanks for you help nice work on the formula 1 conopies
mappy41
11-13-2007, 05:45 AM
thank you guys also! The feathers were done using handheld mask. I got the technique from an airbrush book... but the procedure in the book says that you have to cover with frisket and cut each feather. Then paint them one at a time. I think that will be time consuming plus its hard to mask rounded objects like helmets and canopies. So i just made a handheld mask from cardboard shaped like a feather. Lightly sprayed black over the edges of the mask, then placed a straight edge on the middle part of the feather and sprayed black again giving the feather its texture.

mappy41
11-30-2007, 04:22 AM
I dont really know anything about rc helis, but its fun to see them fly. Fliers say that painted canopies helps them see the heli while on flight (specially the smaller electric ones), so they have their canopies repainted. I just wish that they dont crash the heli and wreck the painted canopies.
Hey Sinontin! go on and paint yours! then post it here for us to see.:D

Mappy, that dragonus canopy rocks, as do the others, I just really can relate to the dragonus one, I was having a hard time comming up with a paint job that accentuated the lines. I also really liked the F1 themed ones :ybeer1:
mappy41
11-30-2007, 09:08 PM
Thanks Crash!...Yeah! of all the canopies i've painted, the Dragonus was the hardest. It had lines unlike any other canopies. The first time i saw that canopy, i said, it's weird looking. It would probably look good if it was painted flat black, it will look like a stealth heli. But it will be hard to see during flight.

Mappy, did you paint these on the inside in reverse, or on the outside, like you would a car, bike, or helmet?
mappy41
12-19-2007, 12:27 AM
All the paintjobs posted so far were painted on the outside because they were made from a flexible white plastic( not sure if its styrene or acrylic) of fiberglass. But i've tried painting in reverse and it was hard. I've only done two canopies in reverse and both of 'em were my brother's.

Iverson33- Just like what Sir ABD said (thanks Sir ABD), I'm from Manila, Philippines. Well, it depends on your location...Some of the canopies I painted were shipped to Hong Kong and Singapore(both of 'em near the Philippines), but if your located in the USA, im sure that a lot of people can paint those canopies a lot better than I do.

some awesome designs mappy.
i want to start doing abs, fiberglass rc aswell. are any of the canopies you painted fiberglas? if so, what type of primer did you use?
mappy41
07-18-2008, 02:00 AM
jonmiller- Gud AM sir! Most of the canopies are fiberglass. For fiberglass canopies, I use a surfacing primer.
jonmiller
07-18-2008, 05:13 AM
and to you too buddy. :)
can i ask, is it the duratec surfacing primer? had a quick look on google and this seemed to be the main one. if not, what brand do you use and where do you get it?
also, whats your method if you dont mind me asking? i.e. prime, sand with 600, base color, interclear? etc etc
just tryin to find out how people go about things for different tasks in hand because as you prob know im completely new to the whole 'normal' painting thing.
cheerz,
jon
:)
mappy41
07-18-2008, 10:38 AM
jonmiller- Gud PM sir! IMO the rcshells u've done(from the other thread) are amazing given that they are painted in reverse. I stared at the monitor trying to visualize how some of the shells were painted. I painted on lexan canopies before and I know that it's hard (if not impossible) to correct any mistakes in the process of reverse painting. Im 100% sure that you can adjust to 'normal' painting easily!
I'm not familiar with Duratec paints. In fact, alot of paint brands are not available here. High quality paints like PPG, Dupont, and HOK(just recently) are very rare around here and very expensive. So I end up using paint brands locally available. For the heli canopies, I use ANZAHL brand. I think its a local brand with its own line of urethane primers, topcoats, reducers, etc. Not as good as the quality brands, but it will do.
When I paint fiberglass, first I make sure that it's free from the wax or release agent from the mold. I then sand the canopy with 320grit so the Surfacing primer will have something to bite on. When the primer is dry, I will sand it using 400grit sandpaper looking for high and low spots. I'll put another coat of primer, let it dry, then sand with 600 grit. If the surface is good enough, then i'll apply the base coat, graphics, then clearcoat.
Others may have a better method of painting so ask the other painters as well. Its only been a year and a half since I started painting canopies and im still learning from past mistakes, i.e. when the paint peels off(from those polypropylene plastic canopies which are hard to prime for painting). But with the fiberglass ones, I have no cases of paint peeling off so far. :D

mappy41
01-02-2009, 11:33 PM
Tnx Sir Cowboy! A big thanks also to edhubbs for the airbrush video tutorials in youtube. For the past few years, i've wondered how they do the wrinkled effects on custom auto paintjobs. I never knew that its a simple painting procedure to add texture to the paint. All I needed to do is to try it on a canopy. There were mistakes but not that bad as it looks like it was meant to be that way. It also need a lot of clear coat to cover the texture of the paint...
Stricly Atitude- Sir! Thats a good idea! I can get some gold leaf from a shop around here and give it a go. Maybe i'll try it on the back of a clear plastic sheet first to see the effect. But i rarely get clear canopies for painting, so it will be a fiberglass one gold leafed on the outside and then cleared. Hopefully it will look good...
Will clear coat stick on gold leaf?

cowboy357- Thanks sir! painting canopies made rc helis interesting to me, yet its a very expensive hobby, especially in the beginning where crashes are frequent. So for now i'll just be painting 'em and leave the flying to the hobbyist.
jonmiller, 533Clive- Thank you very much guys, looking forward also on seeing more painted rc's from you guys.
smokingtommy- Welcome to airbrushing sir! For paints I use urethane from primer to clear. I'm not familiar with auto air and Etac paints sir 533Clive mentioned, not even sure if they are available here, so i have no idea on paints. Thats why im stuck with urethane paint, kind of expensive, but paint shops around here will sell paint by half pint (minimum) so that made it more affordable for me. If you have any questions, just ask me, i'll try my best to answer it.

Timberpro theme Canopy (CopterX 450)
This heli canopy is for the owner of a local pest control company (timberpro).

Jmoore12- Thanks sir! I think this can be compared to the white w/ flame stripe canopy that i've painted before. Both paintjobs are on copter X 450's. The brownish orange part was somewhat like a wrinkled effect using plain plastic bags to wrinkle the silver over a black base. Candy orange was painted over it.
My brother's Copter X 500 canopy just finished...

Worked on a crashed fiberglass canopy and rc plane cowl. Tried my best to bring it back to its original shape. Here are some before and after pics...

Wow mappy, Some of those last few items I would have considered non salvageable. Good work, and a true sign of patience to be able to bring them back as well as you did. Killer work as always.

Thanks everyone! It was a real challenge bringing 'em back to their original shape. Took a lot of hours laying peices of fibermat and applying resin to make the canopy and cowling stiff again. Applying automotive putty, then the priming, sanding, and repriming again. In the end its satisfying being able to bring a wrecked piece back to shape (the owner was like... " Wow! It looks like nothing has happened to it!"). The only issue was the weight of the pieces being heavier by 25 grams. But its okay according to the owner.

Again some very nice work. I have had a lack of motivation lately to do any more canopies although I have two I need to paint for customers, I have been busy.
Out of curiosity when you do the white pinstriping around the dagger areas is that a white base that you have masked before you laid down the orange (on the sceadu) and respective other colors? I have been contemplating the best way to go about something similar and that is what came to mind.
I also dig the repair work on the cowl and the canopy. I dont have the patience to do something like that.

Been doin' a foam plug of a heli canopy and then made a fiberglass mold of it lately so I haven't painted much. But the mold is finished so im planning to make and paint canopies sometime soon...
Heres a pic of the mold screwed together...

Mappy,
Just browsed this post from beginning to the end and you must really have some patience. The prep work on some of those damaged shells must have taken ages to repair. Very impressive stuff.
Sorry if this question has been asked before, i didn't read all of the posts, rather looked at the pretty pictures ;) , but what primer do you use?
And do you have any special sanding blocks that you use to get an even surface?
Nice work..
