Trying to get this realistic fire down here's a hard hat and test panel I did. Any comments good or bad are welcome. The hard hat's not cleared yet.

I see ya have the Bodyguard watchin tha treasures.

I want ya to understand that when I try this I hope it turns out this good. Now that you know that I have not done this, it looks too open at the base. Looks like the colors are there but to tight and not blended.

Strictly an amateur opinion and like I said, I hope my first try is this good.

That looks good. The only criticism I have, and only because I think you were looking for some, would be that the flames don't look random enough on the bill of the hardhat. Again, I am far from an expert and that's just my opinion.

Thank you for the honest opinion. It's hard to get one. I know it still needs work, but it's hard for me to pinpoint the problem areas. I am a perfectionist, I won't be happy with it till it's better than mike l's and my flames probably never will be.

Hiya Bones welcome

Hi Josie thanks for the welcome I was just lookin at your fire on the drums looks pretty damn good to me, I can't believe you did that with createx. I would like to learn to do that style with lotsa red it looks kewl. The only part of the hard hat I really like is the back where the flame tips come to an end and they are surrounded by red.

Bones,

I agree the hard hat looks really good from just above the brim up. The brim area does not look random enough. If you can doe the flames like the top across the whole hat you got it. The panel is the same way. The tip area looks good but the base is too structured.

Will be better next time I am sure!

Tim

Thanks moose I agree, But I can't seem to be able to picture in my head the start of the flames I guess.

Pick up a copy of Mickey Harris' "Realistic Flames" video, then do a search on the board here on "reference pictures" Denise posted an awesome link a while back.

I'd say you did a pretty good job on the hard hat. I didnt notice anything wrong at all until some points on the randomness was made. I think you are off to a great start thou. Im curious about the hardhat, is it plastic? And if it is, what kind of prep work did you do on it?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks, Yes the hat is plastic I scuffed it with 800 then applied some bulldog adhesive promoter, Then used some primer to fill some scratches (it has been around for a while) then sanded the primer down,Then black base and fire.

I bought one of micky harris's videos ,but it seemed like he was explaining how he messed up when he did the craftsman truck. I'll have to take another look at it. The one I really like is the John harris one he did a hummer limo and it looks killer He actually paints real looking fire with a snowwhite pearl base then tints it with kandies. It looks real. I think Mike lavalles style more tricks the eye into looking real. I would love to combine the two and get my own style. But first I have to learn the different styles before I can combine them.

I'm sorry I was wrong The first half is how he messed up on the craftsman truck the second half he does the ssr which I like the shapes of the fire but it lacks depth and the colors don't look real to me. Just my opinion. Please don't hold it against me. I was pretty upset that I paid money for the dvd to see how he messed up the craftsman truck. I have since found smartflix and rent any how-to before I buy them. Don't get me wrong he is an unbelievable artist, just don't care for that style of fire. He has since changed his technique I was told, and he doesn't even offer that video on his website anymore.

A couple of points can be taken from what you just said. First, I feel that his explanations of how he was messing up made a clearer understanding of why the later flames worked better. Second, I found the latter sets of flames to be much more realistic and less stylized than the earlier flames... and to me that was what it was about... realism. When discussing stylized flames, his approach is all wrong... and maybe for some his approach is all wrong for realistic flames. In fact I'm sure it is to a lot of people. I'm not trying to defend him... just saying that I got a lot out of it as a beginner in the subject myself.

(I still suck at it by the way... but I keep trying :))

I also will keep trying, I think there is alot there to learn from too even though I don't care for the depth and colors the shapes of his flame licks are very realistic, similar to the shapes of john harris's. That is actually the shapes I would like to incorporate into my flames. Maybe some of that mixed with some mike lavalle style. When I reread my post I may have come off a little harsh and I am very sorry for that. I think there is something to be learned there. When I purchased the dvd I had the other style in mind and was really new at airbrushing and was looking for a easy here's how you do it for a beginner, that it definately was not. I am still a beginner, but have at least now practiced daggers, lines, dots, ect. ect. When I bought the dvd was when I got my airbrush, and I also got Craig Fraiser's intro to automotive airbrushing, now that dvd was worth the money for sure. Now watching it I can get alot more out of it and I have only been at the practice for a couple months. I don't even know what I am saying anymore I am sorry if I came off disrespectful or rude it was not my meaning.

You didn't come off as rude at all. If anything my response was anesthetic. Sometimes I get too analytical.

Sorry I hijacked the thread folks. Carry on.:devil2:

Thanks guys, they still need alot of work. I haven't had a chance to airbrush lately, family stuff. I hope I don't forget everything when I get back to it. Right now I am trying to make a nice little area in the garage to airbrush. Before I just made a little easle that slipped onto my table saw in the front corner of the garage. It'll be nice to have my own work space.

Bones, looks good, developing nicely. I really cant add to the comments already made, I have a question though, what kind of primer did you use? I have used the prep methods you described except I used 600 grit and Bulldog, and cant get my paint (uro) to stick to the dang hard hat for love or money! When I pull the tape for my graphics it lifts the primer and paint off right down to the plastic, did you use a 2K, epoxy or what? I have used a 1K epoxy primer with no luck, I was about ready to throw in the towel thinking there must be a release agent in the plastic, I tried 3 different hard hats from 3 different manufacturers. Im thinking I may need a 2 K primer. Thanks AL
