hey guys, hope you don't mind me postin picks of my work up - seems like all the time. Since I joined the forum it's been great getting other artist's feedback. I work alone all day so I don't get to inter-act with anyone (but itunes radio).

This is another Pirate themed bike I just finished last night. It's the tank cover for a V-rod. I have a feeling there's going to be a bunch of pirate bikes this year!! The owner of this bike own's a Harley dealership in California

The tank was black when I got it, scuffed it with grey scotch and used PPG

Very cool, it has movement. You can almost hear the stom he's plowing through.:) I see your starting to save your whites. ;) Should look amazing when you clear it.

Nice job Jason, looks very cool! Heck post everything and anything you can, this is mostly a visual forum for a visual craft. I was saying to Steven, we need more pics posted, that's what drives the interest.

Again, helluva good job, great flow to it......

Hope we don't mind? I think I speak for everyone that we love seeing new works, especially ones as nicely done as this pirate. Actually it's much more then just nicely done. It's the cat's pajamas, fantastic work.

Lovely work Jason. Is it all freehand or have you managed to smooth the masking edges somehow?

Some of my work has very hard edges when I've used masking which is sometimes required but other times I'd like to achieve a similar effect to what you've achieved. Can you share any techniques?

Also, keep on posting your images. I've just posted a load in another thread so keep 'em coming, I say.

All the best

Hey Grant,
Sorry for the delay in response time here, just noticed your question....

This work here is not all freehand. Usually for subjects which are very reference specific it requires a mask for composition. I printed the image on paper and cut out the highest points of contrast and sprayed some white holding the paper in place by hand (no tape). From there on it is mostly freehand, using a custom cut piece of paper as a shield.

For the paper technique see LucBoivin's thread "The ROCK...w.i.p.", he shows how he uses the paper (sorry i'm not sure how to link his thread in here)

I really like the wood steering wheel.

Did you do an intercoat of any kind before doing the rain?
I'd be super stressed doing random white daggers over an unprotected illustration.

actually the rain drops were achieved by a paper cut mask and sprayed light and heavy and placed randomly for inconsistancy, the mask was the only real way to achieve this effect, the photo is a bit blurred, i will get the tank from clear in a few days and i'll get another pic

Nice work, Jason!
The whole piece comes together really well and that's very cool how you executed the raindrops.
Aye, ye gets three ARGHHSS fer that piece, matey! (and a thumb's up)

I'm looking forward to seeing it cleared, too.
btw, sheez, I'm like you, I seem to forget to take pics when I want to and then trying to wrangle the customers after they get their bike back together.... they're cruisin around and showing it off to everyone but me!

Somehow, I'm thinking that you got that extra inspiration from our crazy weather this fall/winter. Am I right???
Our snow is finally melting, but what's next?
