View Full Version : The Rock color mural...WIP

While using the same subject as my previous project, I wanted to do a mural in color for my portfolio. Decided to use my son's door (cooridor side).

Like Clinton recommended, I started with a good sanding of the door surface then applied 2 cotas of white latex promer. The I sanded with a 320 grit paper.

Using my projector, I placed the subject to the upper part of the door to try to match an adults height. I know he's taller but my door is only 80'' high!!! LOL Planning on painting a pierced wall or steel door with the rock within the openeing so I sized the image accordingly while keeping to the right human scale. I'm using basic Createx paint for this one.

I started by mixing some light brown, golden yellow and a drop of fluorescent magenta with a few drops of white. I then added some Transparent Base to lighten the value. I worked with my Iwata HP-SB+ for this. I start by laying light coats of paint to build the facial feauture, I add more paint to the darker areas and less to the lightest. Like clinton said, because of the white primer, you can actually erase the paint to expose the white!! But I dont plans on working it this way. I dont worry abour overspray because the background is of a very dark color, almost black, so all will be easily covered up. Saves time when this is possible. I then started working some details with the dark brown thinned down with Transparent Base also. So far, I have about 1.5 hours of work if I exclude surface prep and tracing.

The hard part here is that the face is on the upper half of the door, center line of face is at 65'' from the floor so I have to step on a wood cube thats 12'' high to work at proper height but sometime even the cube is too high!! I could always lie the door on its side and paint with my reference pics turned sideways but I'll do this when I'm painting objects but not when its a faces because its important to step back often to observe how things are falling into place.

I still have quite a bit of detailing to do in the face but before I will need to add some pink, some golden yellow and some slghtly tinted white for highlights.

Will post more as I progress.

Thank you Clinton!!!...I was even planning on doing a color T for my son but by the time I'm done, I might be tired of The Rock!!! LOL

The real fun and challenging part here will be to paint the surrounding door area to make him seam like he's standing behing a punched wall or pearced heavy steel door!!

Great start Luc but i have a dumb question....your other Rock was on wood ( kind of)also.....so my question is....why did u make yourself stencils for the 1st and not this one? is it because the ohter one was black and white or just a harder surface????im clueless here

Thanks

Clinton

Josie, not going to speak for Luc here but for the larger stuff like murals it's easier to go freehand. Cutting and placing stenciles on a large area would be too time consuming and you really don'e need them. On such a large surface overspray and control are not as big a factor as something that is 12"x12" or less.

Thats a good question Josie...not dumb.

Thank you Clinton...I could not have said it better!!!

The 12 x 12 painting of the Rock was easy to use mask because I could use 8.5 x 11 from my printer. Plus, I did the gun and shoulder area all free hand while using a white chalk.

This particular painting we see much more of the the body, down to mid chest more or less. One thing is for sure, I prefer to work all free hand than using masks and I will take that route whenever possible.

At the end of the day, its always a question of time vs $.

Good one Len!!! I was a bit surprised when my wife agreed to this project!!!...but I dont think I'll manage to get to toilet seat cover painting like Clinton did!! LOL...But In was also given a green light for the beer fridge in the basement!!! LOL

Good to hear from you Len, was getting worried when we didn't see you much on the forum. I love the work in progress shots also, really adds a whole new dimension instead of just showing the finished work. If that was my door, it wouldnt be going back into the jam but would be hanging on my wall. I have to say it's coming along beautifully. Not only does it look just like him but it's done in a style that reminds me of my favourate artists. Also, that earpiece is perfection in hardware. Great work here.

Thank you Len, benoît is quite happy with it yes!!! Giving hints on what he would like to see for the remainder of the door!!! Always something very special when you can make one of your kid very happy...without actually going to the store and buying something for him!

I spent one evening not long ago shoing him how the airbrush works but he gets discouraged rather fast!!!:-( He's a perfectionist like me but he is lacking the patience that is required when you are a perfectionist!! I'm planning on getting him involved in the design of the ''blown steel door look" which I want to do. I know he likes that...he likes to tell me ''dad do a bullet hole here, do this there..'' and I'll try to get im t spary some paint with me.

I think this is going to be a rather long project because of all that I have on my plate!!! I'm not complaining since its mostly all airbrush related!!

Thanks

Thanks Clinton. Didn't think it would give this effect but I agree with you, it does help witht he skin texture.

Bought myself a motorcycle helmet this weekend!! Not bad for someone that doen't own one hey! LOL.
Bought it at a flee market. Its not a legal one. Its a bean type helmet. Many riders have them but they are not legal. Bought it to do a design on it. Not sure what yet but I have to find a way to get that Auto Air to spray thru something less than my Eclipse airbrushes because man its a small surface to work on and I want to do small details.

The other day I met someone who said he sprayed Auto Air thru a Micron!!! Must have been the one with a .2mm nozzle kit and not the .18mm!!

I'll let you know if I can get it to spray through mine, just picked up a Micron SB on saturday after my class. The art store owed me for two classes so it was almost an even swap. The nice thing about it is he gave me a month to try it out and see if it's going to be any better than my HP SB, if it's not return with no charge. :)

You'll love that airbrush for sure!!! It comes with a .18mm needle and nozzle kit.

You might like it for the diluted Golden paint for portrait type paintings if it doesn't fly with the Auto Air paints.

Cant wait to hear how it all turns out!

Looking very nice Luc, I like the added green makes for a much more drastic look. What color was it you started with and how did you tint it out for the clothing?

Thank you Clinton,

Started off with with some Olive Green (80 drops)from Dr. Martin then I added: (all Createx)

Beige 24 drops
White 15 drops
Dark Brown 9 drops
Black 3 drops
Dark Grey 8 drops
Medium Grey 12 drops
Transparent base....roughly 15 drops

I started off with way too much green!!! LOL...should have started with 40 drops instead.

With this mixture, I built the shirt and dark areas. Because the mixture is transparent I was able to create darker areas with the same color. I love to work with tranparent paint . After that, I did a quick light fog of dark grey then started detailing with a mixture of Dark Brown and Black while making sure not to loose the light areas on the shirt.

OK guys, here more pics of this weekend's work.

I kind of got lost in the details on this one!!! LOL. I wanted to have some kind of control panel at mid door to control somekind of heavy steel bar to lock the door and top and bottom of door.

Once I had all things drawn up, I started by painting the entire door with some Aluminum paint from AA. Kept some white of the door to show thru because I wanted to show somekind of grain direction in the metal to the various door components.

I worked in full size all the details on some sketch paper with pencil. I'm trying hard to get as much detail on the door that on the main subject or else I'm affraid it will look fake.

I diluted some Createx black to start detailing. I realized late in the project that I had a major problem!!! I tried to wipe a small mistake off of the door surface only to realise the black and aluminum paint is comming off when I put water to it and I rub slightly!!! :-( I believe my problem is the Aluminum AA paint. Why did I use this stuff????...when I had silver Createx paint on my paint rack...I'll never know!!

Anyway, late saturday night, I tried to add a mat closs coat from Createx and that did not work. At this point, I'm thinking I have to completely restart the door surface (except the main subject...thank god!) As a last ditch effort, I decided to apply some clear Epoxy Enamel from Krylon in one corner. This appears to have fixed my problem. :banghead:

I get a bit impatient when the project drags on, and this is how I'm starting to feel on this one. Hope to have it completed by end of next weekend.

OK, here are the last pictures of this step by step thread on the Rock mural.

All the remaining items that were left to paint were mostly detail work which meant alot of masking and cutting which hate with a passion to do....but is necessary when working on small details like these. I have to say that i did not help myself by adding a bunch of small details. I had sketched out most of my ideas on a pad but the small small details came as I was working. I was like a kid in a toy store!! I was having fun.

I worked mosly with low tack tape from 3M to the my masking work.

Its fun to paint from the ideas that you come up with. This is something that I have not done enough. I have mastered the art of copying/reproducing subjects, and meanwhile, my creative side has fallen asleep. LOL

I worked mostly with the door on its side in order to have the working area at the proper height.

Thank you for all of your encouraging comments.
