I have some PPG stratoclear DCU2082 with stratoclear dch2085 slow activator and am having problems with orange peel, of course I am spraying this on 1/24 model cars using an Iwata revolution airbrush and I can't seem to get it to flow out smooth as I have seen other modelers achieve. the recomended mix is two parts clear to one part reducer, what would happen if I mixed it 50/50 would it flow out better? or should I mix less reducer to get it to flow out better? also would a 3 part clear/reducer/activator be better than the two part? any recomendations on a better clear that woul flow out better and maybe a little cheaper? I know this is not really made for airbrush use but some of the guys in my model club use urethane clear with great results.

I am not familiar withj this clear however my guess would be that you would need to reduce it (try laquer thinner) a little for it to flow smoothly out of an airbrush. The ratios given are for optimal flow out of a spray gun with a X needle size at X psi, not for your airbrush. It may take a little trial and error so practice on a box or whatever until you get the right combo of PSI and reduction.

thanks Steven, I am alway a little shy with spraying the clear as I don't want it to run. are there any clears that would be better for use in an airbrush? I already have a minijet 4 that I purchased long before the iwata came out it just seems like overkill for a model car and a lot of clean up for the short use.
Can you really use lacquer thinner as a reducer in this stuff?

crash, I'm a PPG man all the way. I would'nt recommend lacquer thinner. You can buy urethane reducer(fast) by the quart, i use ppg's shopline clears and reducers(cost affective).the shop-line clear "jc620" is the lest exspencive, and has a better gloss. It's also pretty thin. As far as spraying what you have through an airbrush, have you tried turning up the pressure to about twise the norm? You get better atomization, and flow. And allways wear a resporator!

illfx I really haven't tried to experiment with this paint to much, I bought it probably 2 or 3 years ago and only sprayed a few things with it never really tried bumping up the pressure, only tried to experiment with the mix ratio.my biggest problem is that the activator jelled up in the can over the years, just wondering if it's worth buying another can of activator or just trying a different clear alltogether?
I didn't think using lac thinner would be a good idea.
