View Full Version : Hand ?
Made it to the garage for a while this morning. While doing dots and daggers I kept thinking that I can't do eyebrows and lashes yet. I decided to do something not quite the same as the others and came up with this.
Not what it should be but I thought it was good enough to post. You folks can see where I am at with this. Just trying to keep things simple.
Tell me what you think and be honest about it if you would. If ya think there is no gravity there, it just sucks, say so.

Clem,
Keep the paint flowing buddy. Us beginners need to keep at it. It looks pretty good. You asked for honest critique so, the area between the thumb and first finger looks a little long. It may be that my hand is smaller than yours but that is what I am basing my anwser on. other than that good proportions. Next think to work on is shading to give it more 3D look. Keep at it you are doing good and do not be afraid of posting your work. The answers you get here will really shorten your learning curve. I encourage all beginners to do the same. It has really helped me!
Moose, thanks for the honest answer. The area you mentioned and the thumb it's self are off but I couldn't erase it. Like you say, just keep practicing.

It's a good try and you should keep at it, you can only get better. The one piece of advise i'll give you is, get a ref pic and study it. Pin it up next to your work (within 6") and paint what you see. Even if you don't think it looks right just paint it as you see it. About 75% of my time spent on a piece is looking at my ref pic the other 25% painting.

Clinton,
That is good advice. That is what I did when I painted the eye I posted earlier. It is a real help. Saves the memory which is fading as fast as my fair color.

All in all clem,,,,,
it's looking pretty good !!!:partyalone:
Your lines are looking a lot better,,,
is there a reason,,, or just a lot of practice !!!

you'll get there it does take time I haven't airbrushed on over a year and just started again a few days ago and having to learn from the begining again I keep going back to dashes and dots and swirls
Whit, I haven't really been able to spend a lot of time with an AB for the last couple weeks. Had the chance to do some practice today and did this after about 30 min. practice. Always have to try something good or bad.
Clinton, I have noticed on some of your posts and others that the reference is close. When I was able to go to the garage I didn't really plan on doing this, just practice but decided to try it anyway when I was there and had the time.
Thanks for the response and good words.

Clem, ain't retirement wonderful? Still not enough time in the world, right? Nicer and nicer work. You are getting your lines down. I personally kinda like the "what was in your head" style of it, kind of a cool composition. Sort of reminds me of an obscure Masonic symbol or something like that. Along with the nice lines, just move your brush back a bit, and pull a little further back on the trigger and do some shading. Nice improvements!
Sharon, wish I had started this some time ago, I'd be past the aggravation of now and most likely working on the upcoming aggravation.
Josie, I just used the brown paint that I was practicing with. It may be a while before I try to do much paint adjusting. Yes I agree the shading could be better. Slowly working on that.
Dog, retirement is a good way to go. At times I work harder than I did on the job tho. Funny how people think you have nothing to do so could you....
Thanks for the responses

Yeah, my days off, I'm busier than I could possibly imagine, makes me wonder about folks who retire and have nothing to do.
hahahahaha,,,,,
sometimes just gettin up is considered somethin to do !!!:partyalone:
One day I was talking about retiring with about four other people. One of them said they would never retire because they would have nothing to do. I really didn't think they would get so mad but when I mentioned they were keeping someone from supporting their family and having decent benefits just for something to do.. .. glad they didn't have a weapon.
Most of the folks I know that retire are busy with something, no problem.
Recommend it to anyone.

When I first looked at your picture, I caught myself looking at my own hand for comparison. Like it was said before, go ahead and fill it in and just trust your instincts. You should realize just how hard it is to do a hand thou, I always try to hide them in my paintings if I can. Sometimes, its great to do nothing but I'm usually always busy with something. I really dont understand people with no interests, no hobbies, no anything. Looking forward to more progress, Clem.
I have to say thanks for the encouragement folks.

The best thing about paint is that you can paint over it when it's not right the first time. With airbrushing you can keep on going over it and over it until it starts to come right. Every so often stand back, have a look at it, compare it to your reference, have some coffee and then go at it again. There's no deadline for you if you're building your skills so you can take as long as it needs. You've obviously got an eye for form so you just need to hone it. If there are any life drawing classes in your area they're a good idea as well. You won't be using an airbrush but you will learn how to analyse the human form and that will help you whatever medium you're using.
All the best
Just a thought Clem,,,
I realize the fingers are in a line,,,
but to keep from having all the open
area behind the eye,,, you could mist
in some fingers,,, mist being "faint" in
this case and emphasize the eye more !!!
Like I say,,, just a thought !!!

Great advice Whit
Whit, I did leave a big hole there didn't I. Thought about putting in some more fingers but wasn't sure about it. Kinda thinking I would end up with more of a mess than I had there. Kinda like I didn't want to push my luck.
Keep throwing in the ideas and remarks. I appreciate the help.

Wow Clem! Definate improvement! I would do what Whit suggested and add them fingers in. I know the feeling about messing it up....I get that way too. Don't worry, it won't happen until the very last little detail you decide to put in before calling it finished.....then your brush will spit on ya!:wink2:
Keep it up!!!
Guess I have more to do with this. When I can get to the garage I'll see what happens.
I noticed Whit blinking a few days ago. Figured he had just finished a good laugh at something, trying to regain his composure. Noticed his version of the Dog too. Waiting to see what else he changes.
Thanks Folks
