I just read your profile. Another thing that I love is avaition pinup type of artwork. I see that you used to paint leather jackets in the 80's (in your profile).
What type of paints did you use for the leather?
Thanks,
Art

Hi Art
I still do paint leathers - not as much as I used to do but enough to keep my hand in. I've not really done the aviation style of artwork though. It tends to be bike or band related. I painted jackets for several shops that sold heavy metal/rock style clothing so it was all Slayer, Metallica, Sepultura etc. album covers and T-shirt designs.
When I first started I was still at school and someone asked me to paint their jacket for them as they knew I was quite a good artist. The only paints I knew about at that time that I thought might do the job were Humbrol Enamels, these little pots of enamel paint for painting plastic models with. My first design was Rainbow's Rising album cover. It looked excellent when I completed it but after a couple of weeks the paint started to crack and come off in places. After trying Gouache (which came off the first time it rained... ahem) I saw some tubes of acrylic. I'd originally thought they were oils and had discounted them, but once I tried them they seemed to do the trick. They flexed with the leather and didn't come off when it rained - halleluyah!!! For the first couple of years I used tubes of artists acrylic but someone introduced me to Createx and I started to use them. I handpainted the jackets for the first few years but gradually got into airbrushing. I also started cleaning the surface with meths before starting to get rid of dirt, grease and excess dye. Createx have a clearcoat as well which I started using to give the artwork a bit more protection, but you can't put too much on or it stiffens the leather and the whole lot will end up cracking.
I still use Createx - the standard range and not the Auto Air. They're fine for the sort of work I do but I would probably use a brand that doesn't clog too much if I had a freehand job to do as their white is a nightmare for spitting everywhere.
All the best
