It is I once more, Colin.

I require assistance on Pinstriping.

I do not have the slightest idea where to start, or what brushes to purchase.

Also, I am sorry if I am putting this in the wrong place.

Any help would definitely be good.

When I start I will be sure to upload some of my masterpieces. :wink2:

A good start would be brushes,,,,,
http://www.dixieart.com/Mack_Brush_Main.htm
Personally I prefer the #00 or #000 in a
mack dagger striper !!! A good scroll brush as well !!!
The dagger for long and/or sweeping lines,,,
the scroll for the tighter curves n curls !!!
Again,, personally,,, I use 1-shot enamels !!!
There are other preferences on all this so
it's going to end up with what your comfy with !!!
Relax,, let it flow,, practice,, practice relaxing too !!!
You get uptight,,, you won't get a good line !!!
This is not much info,,, but hope it helps !!!

Colin, if you can make it up to the D for Autorama, there's a 3 day (one or how many days you can) Striping Jam during Autorama. March 9th I think it starts (query autorama online).

Your advice is very helpful Whit, I will be sure to check out that link and look into those brushes.

Would my Createx paint work with one of those brushes or should I look into buying a second brand of paint specificly for Pinstriping?

What is the D?
If it is out oh Ohio I can't go. xD

Alright Buckeye... lol.
The D, my dear, is Detroit.
No, createx paints will not hang for pinstriping. You're looking at One Shot sign painters enamel (or equivalent product) and mineral spirits..this much I know.

colin,
As Whit already said, Your best choice to start out pinstriping is to purchase a Mack Striper brush. Personally I prefer to use sword brushes. The difference is a sword has a flat top and curved belly when viewing the brush from trhe side. The dagger ai tappered both top and bottom. The majority of stripers recommend using a series 10 brush. The series 10 uses a blue thread on the ferrile to hold thehairs to the brush. The other choice is a series 20. Either will work for practice and there are some who hold out that there isa no difference. I have used both and preferthe Series 10. I like the feel. The paint of choice is 1-Shot lettering enamel. Do you have a Painters Supply in your area? I know they are at least as far south into Ohio as Toledo. They carry 1-Shot. You will also want to get some mineral spirits, paper towels, and a piece of glass. You can use the glass from a picture frame or go to the Dollar store and pick up one. Use either a coffee can lid or glossy magazine to pallette out the brush. You alos want to get some wax free dixie cup[s or go to the drug store and pick up some small medicine cups. They are better.

To properly hold the brush you want the knot where the hairs attach to the handle to point to the right. This is imortant. Even if you are left handed you want that knot to point to the right. This puts the brush in the right orientation. to start out put a small ammount of paint into a cup. dip the brush into the paint and move it in a back and forth motion to load the brush. It is kind of klike you are tryiing to paint with the side of the brush. You may ned to dip the tip into a cup of mineral spirits to thin the paint. You would dip the tip into the thinner and work it back and forth like when loadint the brush. You want to start out just pulling short straight lines. get the feel of the brush and work on consistant line thickness. Then move onto left C curves, Right C curves S curves both left and right. practice them till you cnanot stand it then practice some more. Only then try a design.

Be patient. It is harder than it looks but once it clicks it is like magic.

There is a really good pinstripers page on yahoo

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pinstriperspage

It is run by the gentleman that taught me and he has been striping since 1957. Many helpful tutorials on there. Also check outthis site

There are a few PDF files with pictures on how to hold the brush and starting out.

Good Luck

Good info Moose,,,
guess I shoulda left this for you to answer:partyalone:
Personally never got the hang of the palleting here,,,
I've always just dipped tha paint,, drag between
thumb n forefinger to load the brush,,, you can feel
when the paint is tha right consistency,,, to heavy,,
just dip in spirits and drag back thru fingers mixing
and loading as you go !!
(you learn to keep wet fingers out of the way)
It's all in how you learn so take Moose's advice here,,,
might as well learn to do it right !!!
Also I've found that a cotton "Film Handling" glove
with thumb and first two fingers cut out is great to
reduce any friction on hand drag when pulling a line !!!
Actually called a "DarkRoom Glove",,, can be found where
they do a lot of film developing,,, 3 pair to the pkg !!!
Some just use talc powder to make a smooth pull,, but
the talc tends to gum up if it gets into paint !!!
With thumb n fingers cut out,,, leaves fingers exposed
to "Feel" the brush,,, covers fingers that hit surface !!!

Incredible advice moose, I will be sure to follow your directions.

Whit, would it work the same to cut the fingers off of an existing glove?

Well, right now I am going to research this topic and find these places you are mentioning.

Well they aren't going to have these kinds of brushes at Prizm so I am going to have to beg my parents to get me them from the internet.

The "Darkroom" gloves are kinda like a T-shirt for your hand !!!
Very lightweight and does'nt get in the way,,, comfy too !!!
Don't know about any other type of glove,,, never tried it !!!
I was into photography at one time,,, that's where the glove
idea came from to make your hand glide along a car fender !!!
Lay your guide finger on a piece of chrome and pull next to it
so very smooth it's not funny !!!:partyalone:
Sometimes on a heated fender your hand squeeks n studders
leaving traces in your line !!! This eliminates that !!!
I've seen hands dusted with talch powder for same purpose,,,
but this eliminates the powder !!!
Good Luck on it !!!

Whit, I use the bulk pack cotton gloves you can get at places like harbor frieght, etc. 5 bucks for 6 pairs, or something like that. Same premise though. Cut off two of the fingers, and voila.
Saw some striper in the Airbrush Art and Action mag out of Germany doing this...thought it made sense.
Of course, my striping still sucks.

Good advice Moose, only thing Ill add is I found that the Wizard's DVD, pinstriping basic training, to be a great intro training aid. He shows you how to trim the brush and master the basic lines. Another thing I did starting out to break the monotony of painting lines was get a clear piece of glass and put some flames (hand drawn or copied) under the glass and practiced out lining them. At first it will be a mess, just scrape them off and try again. With flames you get all the curves and learn how to turn the brush and work off the tip. It is a long learning curve (Im still learning) but well worth the effort. AL
