Hi everyone here is my first post (second really after introducing myself). I have just purchased myself a airbrush starter set to learn the art of airbrushing, it comprises of a compressor, and airbrush manifold together with three airbrushes (BD-128, BD-130 & BD-135 made by Fenga i believe) various pots of paints etc etc. After a couple of attempts using some tutorial videos i am starting to get the impression it is quicker with a brush. Can somebody tell me what i need to practice and what paint and paper for getting the best results (the paint supplied is made by schmincke). I ideally would like to eventually do portrait painting with a airbrush. If there are any recommended books or videos for beginners in airbrushing please post the details.

Start with dots & daggers. See the beginner section on the front page of this site, links are below. For practice, paper towel and ink are inexpensive till you start to develop skills.

If you look in the "Illustration" forum you willl see good examples of where your practice can take you. Stick with it, be patient, it takes time. Good luck!

Hi again, thanks for the info. I have just about perfected the dots but think i have some way to go with the dagger strokes as they seem a lot harder to master but will keep going until i am there. I found a couple of old rolls of wallpaper that have been ideal for practicing on (the back white side) also managed to scrounge a big bottle of tattoo ink from my son. I also just read the posting on stencils and the x-ray film, as my daughter works in the local hospital i think i will ask her if she can get me a supply of old x-rays and try that out also.
really cool site, with loads of help and info

Hi there Wijnendael,
Blinddogs got some GR8 tips there...As monotnous as it is, Dots & Dagger strokes it'll B for awhile my friend... I use Createx & Aqua Flow paints & dirty old T-shirts & rags to Airbrush on...paper towels R inexpensive but if ya don't have the the right touch (controlling the air & paint flow) on the gunz , you'll B doin more holes & tearing on the paper than anything... Have fun & go 4 it... Aloha -HotAir-
