Has anybody here used this combo (Krylon FUSION base coat, layed Auto Air Graphics then KRYLON Clear)? I searched and seen some have but I'm curious about longevity and adhesion issues. I called the 1-800 Krylon number and was told that I couldn't use this combo, Fusion doesn't need a clear, other paints want stick, blah, blah, blah. Sounded like she was reading a script.
Anyways my project will be an IGLOO Cooler and was looking at this as an avenue of approach............................Kwit

Thats the paint that sticks to plastic? I've been wondering the same thing but using createx have some ugly plastic plain white chairs ..
I've used the "Fusion" for basecoat on batting helmets,,
colorwork with AA/Createx,, clearcoated with 2 stage clear,,
seemed to work okay,, been a couple a years on some and
no feedback on how they held up,, but they looked good leaving,,
all you can do is try it,, see what you think,, then if this
comes up again (which it will) you'll have the answer !!!

Thanks Whit, I have an old Igloo cooler at home that I'll dig out after work and give it a shot. I will be painting on a "High Dollar" IGLOO (see below) probably the first ever customized one:goofy: I don't want them to have issues down the road.......................Kwit

This will an interesting thread to watch and see how it develops! I'm always interested in alternatives!
Personally I'd never use Krylon for any paying gig...I was raised on spray bombs...Couldn't get the good stuff, But rattle cans could be found for $1.00...I've clear coated everything under the sun with Krylon and others..They all look good for a few (if they are very well protected and cared for)..But 9 outta 10 would dull and crack eventually...Especially if they are exposed to Sun on a regular basis.
The Fusion is kinda new around here..Maybe 5 years or so since it's been around..Luckily I don't need to play with Cans anymore..But I have messed with Fusion trying to be cheap and quick on some of my own projects..Honestly I wont waste my $$ again..I didn't see anything good about it...With my previous track record of Krylon, I doubt it'll hold up to well..So I wont waste my time/$$ on it anymore.
Growing up I was always trying to get the best from crap..LOL...I figured paint is paint...Now I only use Krylon and others around the house on things that don't need real paint..haha!..Quick touch ups or something that isn't worth much effort..No Spray bombs ever touch any kinda custom work....But I'm weird and stubborn so could be just me..hahaa!...Good luck!

You should be able to get away with prepping the plasitc, using some adhesion promoter (Bulldog is a favorite) then using any spraybomb primer. I tend to use Krylons primers. Then prep the primer and you should be good to go on the AA.
As far as Krylon clear, it will work, but if it were my customer, I'd at least look at some "budget" 2 stage clear, like the stuff on Eastwood.com. I guess it mostly comes down to how much you told him you'd charge, and how much profit you need to make. But if the Krylon goes south in a year or two, you can bet he won't be refering any customers your way.
First need to take into account coolers don't usually
qualify as heirloom pieces,, here they tend to be seasonal,,
I know we get a new one every year,, well,, come nice
weather,, time for a cooler,, and that usually means a new one,,
then again,, painted,, it could become a very nice lamp !!!
That lil cooler,, with an umbrella,, could stay around fo awhile,,
with a 2 stage clear (automotive) it would hold for a couple anyway !!

Thanks for all the comments All. I initially was planning on the Bulldog, AA, then Auto Clear but I'm leary about pulling this thing apart (Back wheel and drives area). I might have to go back and double check to see about the disassembly.
This is not for a paying Customer though, it's for a friend, and it's one of those "what the hell that'll be cool to paint" jobs. I just don't want it to look like crap or flake off in the long run......................................Kwit

You get a new cooler every year? Wow. my parents still have the old red igloo they've had as long as I can remember (25 years, atleast). My Grandpa still has one of those REALLY old styrofoam coolers. He is a textbook pack-rat, though. He'll save a broken toaster in case he needs to make an extention cord out of the toasters cord. Why he would need a 3' extension cord, nobody has ever figured out. Himself included.
Of course, this is the same man who after my great-grandma passed away and we were cleaning out her house (he learned his rack-ratting from her, we stopped counting at 6 dumpsters). Anyway, she had a freezer in her basement, and Grandpa got the job of cleaning it out. Things were going along OK until he yells out "wow, there's some venison in here from 1967!". The collective response was "ewwwwwww". After about 10 seconds of silence, you hear him ask my grandma in a kinda-whisper "think we should take this home? I'll betcha its still good yet." Since he whispers about as loud as a normal person speaks, we all heard it, and gave another collective round of "awwwwww, no way, Grandpa!"
None of that has anything to do with the question, I know, but I figured an amusing family story is always a good thing.
Anyway, if it's not a paying job, I'd just ask the owner, and have him pay for whichever clear he chooses. If he want's it to last a couple years at the most, then rattle can will work. If he's thinking more long term, or wants it to actually look good, then a 2 stage is the only way to go.
Check out Innate.com, and look under DIY kits. He should have a clear coating set from X-Otic for about $40 that should be enough to cover. I tried out the X-otic clear last year and I'll be uing it on future products once I run out of HOK.

I have used Krylon Fusion and added graphics with good results. May I suggest that you clear with Dupli-Color Acrylic Lacquer which has a fan spray pattern (just like the fusion does) or you can get a quart of clear lacquer for about 20.00 if you have a detail spray gun.

I am playing with Fusion on glass.. Fusion first on WELL CLEANED glass, then AA base coat, then whatever.. then automotive clear on top.

Shiva- how is that Fusion working for you on glass?
an interesting problem.. 2 pieces are inside-never been exposed to outside weather.. fusion, AA basecoat then aa paint..holding fine..
a glass on the car-cleaned, dewaxed, primed in an area with Fusion and left exposed to the weather-no top coat or anything... its peeling right now after about 5 months exposure to the rain/snow/ice
