So, I'm a beginner.. got my first airbrush for xmas this year and since then have been obsessed with it even though I don't get much time to do it. Work full time in a laboratory and was hoping this could be a creative outlet that I will never do as a business because I learned that lesson with embroidery.

So this is the first chance I got to try spraying something with frisket. It's a copied image of the beloved Ricky Rock Rat for any of the rock climbers out there. Thought I'd practice on something that was meaningful to me.

The question I have is, how do you avoid the tiny overlap areas when spraying one section of a mask and then trying your hardest to line it up again. Seems I wasn't as dead on as I thought I was and some white appeared. In the future I'd like to go less comic style and try this again with no black outline. Hopefully that will help, but curious as to what the veterans do to avoid that or how you correct it. I wanted to go freehand to fill, but thought I might make it look worse. Also plan to develop his climbing rack, but I think the best time for me to AB will be between midnight and 4 am for time constraints.. essh. Got a long way to go, but luckily it's not a race.

I appreciate anyone willing to give some insight. Thanks!

Looking Kewl, I dig it so far.

far as lining up the frisket once it's pulled...No tricks that I know of....See thru frisket helps...But all in all, it's justa good eye and steady hand...I'll spend crazy time trying to get it just right..Try after try till it fits perfect....Sorry i can't give a ya anything magic, Tiz the hard way for me, all I've ever done:)

Thanks for the reply ABD. Kind of figured it would be like putting a puzzle back together.. perfectly. I usually cram the pieces to make them fit, guess that's not the case with airbrushing! haha...

Have you ever NOT got one right that you thought you did? Did you freehand it? Just curious to the people that might have had that one mess up with alignment. Thanks!

Oh yeah for sure....Ya pull it up only to find a gap or the base color sticking out like a sore thumb...HATE THAT!!!.LOL...Freehand shields come in handy for that...Whether you cut them or have some "French curves type" bought stencils.....Hold the stencil with one hand and mist in some color to cover the boo boo.:D

Hey Rudeboy... One thing that I like to do is before you lift the section of frisket out that you are going to paint...place a strip of tape...maybe a piece of 1/4" tape and use it as a hinge. Once you lift the frisket piece out just let the tape act as a hinge and flip it over and being careful not to lift the frisket that it is now taped to. I also like to lightly cover this piece with something to prevent overspray on the adhesive side. When you're ready to cover back up just roll it back into place. Mind you this is not a perfect setup and when you lay it back down you have to make sure everything is lined back up, but at least the piece is still in the same position it came out as...Hope this helps ya some

You can apply registration marks. Like an X to mark the spot. This is especially helpful when you have a circle for something like a planet. Place your Xs randomly, so that if you have 4 Xs on a circle, they are not distributed evenly, and you can tell which part of the X aligns up with the other 1/2. I hope this helps!

a hinge! Good tip, thanks for the info, I'll try that out next time. I'm planning to keep at this same design till I think I get it down. Learn learn learn. I'd like to put something like this in massive size on my garage climbing wall so practice makes perfect I guess!

hahaha..Ohhhh, so Boots was on to something, I thought he was just disgruntled...hahahaha!....My bad Boots, ZING over ma head:D

Kinda ta do with Airarts comment on the registration marks...I use overspray like that a bit...You can match up Overspray to get the right position when re applying...But ya still gotta get it right up perfect to the edge, which is always hard..(fer me anyway:))

Looks great.. as for frisket.. I will go back freehand but with the lighter color so that way your darker color will still look crisp

Yeah, frisket can be a real pain to get back in its original position. I'll have to try that "tape hinge" trick next time I use frisket. I just don't use it as much lately as I have in the past, mostly because of the adhesive residue and the fact that it ISN'T as "low tack" as it used to be! Rudeboy you're only a short drive south of me! How did ya get the handle of Rudeboy--are ya into ska music like me?

I defiantly am.. Kinda out of the scene now since getting married and a kid on the way, but my ipod is loaded with it. Ska is just great music. It always comes and goes in waves, so I'm hoping the new rise will start again soon. Last summer I was able to catch the 3 Minute Hero reunion show at the Fine Line. Brought back great memories of hanging out with them and the Scofflaws at the Moorhead State Ska Show. I was roommates with the trombone player from Alexandria's own high school sensation Flux Skapacitor. And now, the head of that band owns Beaner's Central in Duluth, Jason Wussow. He also has a band called No Room to Pogo and they still have a pretty good Ska influence although his music has progressed. He's damn good! Check out his shows sometime up there. He's told me he's still in contact with Chris Murray, aka Venice Shoreline Chris and is trying to line him up to do a show there. I saw him in the cities with The Slackers a few years back, excellent show for a one man band! If you hear of any good shows in the area, let me know. I'd love to dust off the old stompin boots.

I've met Jason and have seen No Room to Pogo, also have one of their cd's. I went to Beaner's a few years back with my wife to see a 3-piece instumental band from Philly called Dysrythmia--we ordered a couple of sandwiches and coffee and sat at a table pretty close to the stage. Jason came over and says "We've got a live band playing shortly, they're kinda loud...." I said "Yeah we know about the band-that's why we're here. I heard the ad on the radio." He left and came back shortly with foam earplugs for us. I think he thought we were a little older than his usual clientele and would be blown out by the volume level--I should have told him that only a couple of years before we had been to First Avenue in Mpls. to see Motorhead, it was actually my second time seeing them at First Ave.--still one of my favorite metal bands!! As for ska, we got to see The Specials and Mighty, Mighty Bosstones at an outdoor concert over in Wis. some years back--both bands were topnotch!! 3 Minute Hero got their name from a song by The Selector--I've never seen either band. Have you heard of Bim Skala Bim? They're from Boston, they do a great ska version of Pink Floyd's song Brain Damage!! As for live shows around here, we don't really get squat anymore--I've spent the last 4 years playing bass in a blues band--even got to play at the Bayfront Blues Fest in '04.....so I'm well aware of the live music scene here in Duluth. I'll keep an ear open, though!
