Hey guys -
The fire effect is amazing but I'm extremely new to this and can't seem to figure out what sort of stencil to use as a start to flames?
Can anyone post a 'how to' step-by-step with pics of the stencils and techniques etc so I can have a play!
Cheers

These are the 'esential 7' stencils, good for practicly everything: (Normally they cost a smasll fortune, but ya can print em & cut them out with an exacto blade...I do that too hehe)

Jeroen those only print big enough to use on RC bodies!

Nope, you can enlarge em, print em on 2 sheets of paper. Tape them together & tape em on you window. Then take an a3....put that over it. Then with a pen draw the lines out & cut that. I've been doin that for ages....always worked for me.

Saved me a hell of a lott $$

yes they WILL, with the proper program, enlarge to whatever, and next, IF you happen to have a scroll saw and access to some place with plastic sheeting made for glass substitute, you can have a BLAST. cuts real good.

I got a stack of 'templates' now almost 10" thick, (hint-the plastic substitute glass is under 1/8" thick) Some of the patterns I made 4 different sizes of, from 6" up to close to 14" in size.

Another good score was at a Kitchen supply store, some heavy clear vinyl place mats for a table, got something like 50 of them for like $15

Nice tip Shiva, just happen to have a scroll saw in my shed lol....never thought of this.

ADVICE.. the 'fake glass' comes with thin plastic sheet on both sides for protecting? LEAVE IT ON till done cutting.

I find that a paper pattern of suitable size, with temporary spray adhesive applied, and if you got a friend that wants a copy of the stencil, stack 2 sheets of the plastic again with the temp spray adhesive.. saw will cut both easily.

split and pull the thin cover sheeets, and youa re good to go, file any rough spot as needed.

Cheers Shiva, think we know it as perspex, can get a toughned version as well to use as safety glass, use a fair bit at times on the ship.

Haaa..I too have done this techniques forever.....I just dont like to come onto the forums and tell everybody to do it (it is stealing of sorts)...but why anybody would buy a template that can easily be freehand cut is soooo beyond me(some templates are more than worth their $$ to buy when theyre very intricate)...if your excuse is you cant cut well...then practice cutting...if your gonna do alot of airbrushing, you will need to know how to cut anyhow....but in respect for the stencil mfgrs, I tend to keep quite about that one......Kudos to you CDM for saying it, It's something that I always wanna say but never do.....it's a HUGE $$ saving tip.

has anybody vectorized these things (template pics...I have tons of em in jpeg)??????? sure would be nice to have them all in a vector format???

Or find a shop that sells drafting supplies and buy the .5 or .8 Grafix Clear-Lay both work very well for stencils

I usually just make my own. just draw a complicated french curve on a filing folder and cut it out with a razor blade.

You have a good point Gordon, but most artists that sell these stencils have a VERY royal income. It is indeed stealin' but I say..If someone never airbrushed, this is a way to figur out cheap if this form of art suits ya. Becouse if not....you end up with expensive material that ends up on E-bay... Besides if you ab longer & are good @ it, you'll buy the original eventually..

Yip, I know it's easy to see a stencil and trace it as your own off the net..I figure if ya seen one curve ya seen em all though..LOL....If I need some random bends and curves I'll cut em before I ever buy em...But I wouldn't trace someone else's..Their half circles/curves wont be any better than mine..hahaha!

Have one of these carpenters bendy thingys about 1/2" square, 15" long been looking at using that as well, one of these I'll get it, it might be handy for awkward shapes and never used, now think I have found a use for it lol....................

Or hey, you could just buy the stencils and help out the guy that designed them and paid for the manufacture. Call me old fashioned but should you be encouraging this?

I have to agree with you Aerart I have seen ab videos downloadable but I bought them instead... the stencil will last for a very long time and I belive they will be older than you.

If you do this, fine by me, but I choose to support my ab hero they are worth it... in my case M. Lavallee at killerpaint

ABD has a point to, why should sombody elses shapes be better... I buy mine cuz im lazy, and the creator gets a cut
