I'm using mostly sikkens and Dupont paints which aren't transparent. I used to some of my works these base coats mixed with a binder and reducer to make them transparent. The binder was a thic colorless pigment. The problem was that the colors were a little dull. To my last one I used the paints as they are, the colors are bright, but cover a lot and I had to use a lot of paper masks not to make mistakes.

My question is do you use paints that are already transparent (not kandies) or is there any other way to make these basecoat paints transparent?

I usually work on black surface, i do the design first with white and then I want to go over it with a paint that won't cover the tones I've made with the white.

Yup like you said if you take base colors and over reduce or mix with a clear binder, it'll look kinda transparent but loose the color a bit...Only way I know to get the Kandy/Trans look is to buy em.........For kandies I use HOK and for Trans I use Goldens.

Maybe someone has a better answer for ya.

you can take a base and reduce it and add a balancing clear to it. but as you said you will reduce the color value. You have to be careful in doing this as it will effect the binders in the paint. This can cause an adhesion problem. Your best bet would to buy some clear and a few tint pastes or toners and go have some fun with no worries. Hope this willl help you out.

When you say toners, can the colors used in printers mixed with clear?
