i use co2 in my house,,you need a regulator which you can get on ebay for under 50 bucks..just make sure you get one that will allow you to use at least 60lbs of pressure.
some regulators have a safty that wont let you go over 50 or 60 lbs..mine is rated for 160 psi..they cost about the same so get the one with the higher pressure.
you can buy or rent cylinders from a welding supply place to buy a 20 lb cylinder will cost up to 100 buck..i own 3..i just exchange an empty for a full one and it cost me about $15.00..if you rent a tank tank rentals are about 5 to 8 bucks a month.
as far as how long it will last it just depends on what you are doing..i can get about 10 to 12 hurs doing t's at 60 psi or 25 to 50 hours doing fine art at 20 to 30 lbs...
anyway here is a link to more detailed info than i can give you here, oh yeah i use 20 lb cyliders anything bigger is just to heavy to handle.

I used to run just compressed Nitrogen (you breathe roughly 79% of it every day)...it doesn't freeze up, and costs about the same to have fulled. Matter of fact, I have a bottle here...anyone want it? Unsure whether or not it lasts longer than CO 2.
