customer brought in his old wooden surfboard, wants a tiki god on it, and gave me the creative hammer so here goes....:devil-smiley-033:

1.cleaned it with wax a grease remover, scuffed it good with gray scotch pad, cleaned it again.

2.pencil sketched on paper, cut out the oultine, you can see i tape up the positive (or inside) to the surfboard for correct placement, then tape up the negative.

3.sprayed some redish-brown, here i don't use a taped mask because i don't want a clean sharp edge, definately don't want it to look like a sticker, so to not get a bunch of underspray i work with my fingers holding the paper down as i spray the edges

here i cut the drawing apart and use the pieces as sheilds to set up the composition and work my way through with a light and a darker version of the base color

Very nice so far, nice and sharp looks very 3D. Are you adding any background at all.

wanted the tiki to be stone rather than wood, since the surfboard was aready wood, added cracks and put some life in his eyes

no background, the project is for a local pinstriper, mitch kim, and he's gonna stripe all the surrounding areas

Guess I should have waited till you were done posting up pics. :) That is one cool Tiki. Looks like stone to me, and the fire is a nice touch. Customer should be really happy. Upping the standard once again.:wink2:

thanks dog, i'm figuring it out, i've never taken an airbrush class or an art class for that matter, everything i've done i've learned the hard way, i can say now that i know how not to do it, every project is so different, there's no formula for how it's done, you just wing it right

Once again, thanks for the breakdown. Nice job on the Tiki. Very nice job on going so far by figuring it out yourself.

Keep up the good work,

Clem

really sharp work Jason. And I agrea with you , sometimes not taking any art classe's or airbrush courses gives you more room to create without guidelines. Trial and error..............awwwwwwwwwwww life is good

Good grief, the way the progress evolved from the first picture to the last, I half expected the god to jump off the board and do a little dance. This is why I like these forums, watching the magicians play. Wonderfull work, truly fun thread you created for us mortals.

once again jason, you rock man. but instead of outsourcing your pinstripe why don't you take it on? means more money for you and gets another skill under your belt that makes you more valuable.

thanks Jason,

I can stripe but Mitch Kim is a very highly respected pinstriper around here he's always 2-3 months booked and it's his board, i was honored that he had me do the tiki for him, it's gonna help my business alot being connected to him.

I'm gonna do a custom show in 3 weeks and it'll be there and everybody around here knows Mitch and his work so it'll be a great compilation piece.
