Hi All!....Hav'nt been doing much painting...But a lot O bodywork,hehe.....Thought i'd share this little (WIP) project

This is going over the old Tag location on a 90 Mustang....Flushing it smooth..Thought i'd add a light in there for good measure,hehe..It looks like a horror show right now, lot left to do.

I started with a piece of fiberglass i already had on there...It's been cured for a year now...So i hope to have no shrinkadge..(nobody likes that).

(Pic1)...I cut out the words with a Dremel tool

(pic2)...Flipped upside down, placed in missing pieces

(pic3)..Poured in Fiberglass resin...Let cure for a day

(pick4)..Put it back on

(pick5)..Stuffed a flashlight behind it to see if it works.haha!

Left out a lot of prep and sanding in the above steps...Just the simple skinny on the deal.......Gonna put marker lights inside the box...Havn't decided what i'll run em off yet..Parking Lights, switch, brake light???...The car's gonna have a Kandy paint job, over top of the words..Should be virtually invisible until lit.
.....Gonna even up and "crisp" the letters better with primer, and paint.

Whaddya all think?..First time i've built something like this...Thought some of you might digg!

Kewl job there Dell. I did alot of the late 60,s early 70,s chevy pu,s that way, smootie gates with recessed tags, with the cutout,s on each side of the tag. But You have to use the red lenses on the rear nowaday,s. Perty hard to get away with the old blue dot,s these days around here I guess. Cowboy

Glad ya digg Whit n Cowboy......I'd never seen this in real life (in person anyway)...Seen many ways of doing it, Looking on the net..... But thought this would be the most simple.....Probably wont be lit all the time...To prevent tickets, hehe.

Cowboy i put a set of those "blue dots" in my first car...It was an 87 Camaro though:lol:

This car has a Modern day Body Kit..(i put on)....But i'm doing a lot of old Skool work also...Frenching antenna, lights...Shaved handles...I'd Chop it if i did'nt have to deal with the glass, haha!

....Just doing all my Favs from all the Eras, :partyalone:

The "stang" is primed over right now..I'll just sand it quick later on to bring the the word back..Also put in a pick of what I started with for comparison

I dunno Josie....I sold the car over the winter..So my plans for it went out the door...Now it's up to the owner...He's leaning towards a solid color...I might be able to persuade him into some cool AB work in there somewhere?..I'll keep ya'll posted..Thanks for the comments:)

Been working on this ole gal again..Here is where the bugs feasted on me today:D....Nice day tho, sun was out, upper 70's, cranked the tunes in da shop..LOL

1st pic is what it looked like when I 1st put the body kit on...Pretty good comparo for the updated pics.
17265

Today I cut the hole for the license plate...Put a piece of sheet metal in there..Bolted in 3 spots that are good and out of view. Now I'm fiberglassing in the mold around the bottom/top and sides....It'll be all smooth and spiffy like the rest eventually.......Still lots to go.:cooldude:

Very nice indeed, still no decision on the paint.....

Nope on da paint..LOL...I convinced him to drive it in Primer:dance:.......He really wants to drive it anyway, All the motor being beefed and purring, should be a fun lil tooler....But I got thinking on how much I changed the body with Fiberglass and such...I'd hate to have a sexy kandy paintjob on there, only to find a big crack through the bumper a month later.

This way he can take it out and beat on it for a summer...We'll find any problem area's and refine from there...Probably be a winter paintjob.

Gonna do it in black Primer...Should look pretty mean that way:D

Indeed!..So long as yer craving to paint when ya get home, all is good!..LOL...Yer never gonna get worse from more practice..(though I swear I've had it happen a few times, hahaaa)

I'm still heavily leaning toward black primer on my bike..LOL...So nice to not have to worry about polishing and all that..haha!...get a chip, just blast on some more..Weeeeeee!

AndyW
04-26-2008, 04:23 PM
Hahaha, I have about 3hrs polishing to do when I get home just to give it a quick go over lol........
Actually my thoughts have changed since picking up the brush, yeah love custom works, always have, but have so much fun on Tee's and boards etc that have only done the skull thing once months ago lol.........., apart from the fender got a Tee design want to play with as well, now it's just escaping long enough from my chores list that her indoors starts/carries over when I was last home hahaha.

Aaahaaa!, good call:rotflmao:

Was thinking it'd look cool in black primer, and make the bolts look rusty..It's all plastic and alloy..but it'd be funny to make something new look old and rusty..hehehee....Like someone left a sportbike in a field for 10 years and the plastic rusted.

Awww hell I dunno, so many ideas, lame ones ta boot:rotflmao:

Looking good Dell, Great shot of Yer Paps also . As far as the overspray, Try a test panel with a wet sponge & ajax or any other powdered cleaner that has a lil grit to it ( Without any strong chemicals in it or possibly any contaminents ) . Allways worked for Me to remove & smooth oversprayed areas . & More importantly tell Him to NEVER get any wheres close to the damn thing with tire cleaners or interior cleaners like amorall, Or all bets are off on the future paint job, That crap will absorb into the primer damn near all the way down to the metal, fiberglass , & or fillers . Been there done it, Why I would Never let a customer taker away in Primer since. Good show Bud .

I was just gonna ask...."is it done yet?"

Not that I know of....Maybe it does..I've heard some do...Thought that was the Primer of the old days...Everything I prime gets wetsanded silly...Never had any issues...Sported my share of Primer clad Cars with no issues either...But I'm no chemist, just doing my thang..LOL.

Every inch will have to be sanded again before paint...if it starts to rust, It's just a few more steps in what I'm already doing anyway:D

weelz
07-14-2008, 01:04 PM
i think its bodge that absorbs water. not trying to tell a painter how to paint but my bro allways tells me if the surface that the paint is going on is flat, the paint will go on flat. he usually flats the primer back with 1800 grit and the paint lies on really well.

as for the car, in those outside pics, it looks like something out of mad max lol (no offence) and tose lights are a bit blingy for my liking but what ever floats his boat

I wetsand Primer with 400..Paint lays on slick and still has some bite!!

Jeroen..hahaaa!...Everybody that thinks they can paint opens a body shop around here...Had to be 3 over the years in my town..They do insurance jobs and usually fail miserably..LOL...Naaaah, If I wanted to do body work i'd just quit this and get hired at a dealer..But that'd be givin up on my dream so, not for me...hahaa!

I Gotta agree with Dell, I,m sure the paint would look REAL good layin on the floor at the local car wash. Unless it never see,s the outside world. UNLESS of coarse He,s shootin Laq,s, Different story completly , Each layer burns into the next. No matter if its Primer or not, ( Just make damn sure You,ve got the underlying paint sealed Or it,ll eat right down to it )As long as its laq,s from start to finish. Some new pics....Lights are all spiffy..I wont tell ya how many times I rebuilt around there..LOL..Had it fitted for the stock lights...Then when I sold it, the guy bought these lights...Not even close to fiiting:angry-smiley-030:

That's my Father in the 1st pic..hahahaa!...Running da lights and luvin no windshield...LOL

Gotta rub out the overspray and such yet....I wonder if a buffer with just the wool pad...(no compound) would do the trick???...Never tried, any thoughts???.....Don't wanna sand it cuz he doesn't wanna sport sanded Primer...Be no biggie if I was sanding it and putting color on..Normal dilly, Never tried to make it look somewhat pretty tho:blah:..hahaaa

He put it on the road this year and smacked a Deer within the 1st week...Sooo looky what I get to do..hahaa

The close up pic of the hood, look how it ripples all the way up the hood scoop line....Crazy....That's a $500 steel hood...The cheap fiberglass woulda been easier to fix..hahaa

Yeah Sharon, tiz work..it's the kind that's more of a pain in the ass than anything though...Car takes up to much room, so makes doing any other jobs real hard..For a friend so the pay sucks..hahaa...I'm gonna try and bust it out asap..lol

Got the best I could done with the hood....No major body work tools here..Woulda been great with one of those weld on stud pulling deals.

It has the frame of the hood under the dent..So can't pound from the backside. (nothing easy here..lol)....Either had to pry via 2 access holes...Or cut a chunk of the frame out, pound away on the dent and weld the piece back in...I have no welder though...So tried the pry trick 1st.....Gotter pretty straight...Hammer, screwdriver and a brass rod..hahaa...Wont take much body fill to smooth it anyway....I didn't just want to pack the dent with filler and half ass it.

Hey Dell,,, "Po Boy" way,,,
claw hammer/nail/sheet metal screw/18" 1"x4" board,,,
first tap a hole in the low part of the dent,,,
screw the sheet metal screw in the hole...
lay the 1x4 down on the area,,,
claw hammer (on the 1x4) like your pullin nails,, but
using the screw,, it pulls the dent right out,,, may take
several holes/pulls to get it all pulled out,, then putty,,,
this works best under a "Shade Tree" tho,, but it works
when reg body tools are not handy,,, hahahahaha !!!
Your hood's Lookin Good so far tho !!!
Have a Good'n !!!

Another little trick, used quite succesfully is a wax puller, heat the area up witrh a hair drier, great as well for where the pain is undamaged, anyway heat apply the block, sprinkle water for a quick set an pull, was a bit scheptical but does not a bad job at all.

ABD
05-12-2009, 06:26 PM
Never heard of the Wax puller Andy, interesting.

Yeah Whit I've done a bit of the screw pulling trick in the past..Sometimes have luck, sometimes just rip the screws out and end up with a mangled hole..hahaa!

Figured I'd try this way 1st..Luckily it worked pretty good so I didn't need to get to creative...Tiz in a coat of filler now..Looks like it'll level out real good off this 1st coat..Sure there will still be some low spots, nothing to major though.

JimmyG
05-12-2009, 09:24 PM
Yeah..mangled holes can sure come back to haint oneself....only a few true fixes...

AndyW
05-12-2009, 10:44 PM
Lol Dell just noticed I seemed to type in my sleep ha ha.......yip a little cylinder of wax with a rope and a pull handle attatched. Doest mark any paint work as I say you just heat, apply the block, pour on cold water to set it (degrease first), then pull, amazing the amount of force you can apply, then just knock it off.

Got all my fixin's in Primer today...Now just a final sand and she gets covered in flat black...John Deer blitz black to be specific...Yip, Tractor paint!!...Single stage enamel, good and strong, easy to touch up, cheap as dirt...The owner and I both agreed it's just not worth getting fancy with.....Imagine the work if that would have been in kandy when the deer said hello.:speechless-smiley-0

Tail lights were a major project (separate from the deer fiasco)....As ya see in the old pics I originally smoothed in the stock lights all flush....Over the winter one of the lights snapped in half...The actual lens split..Body work held perfect, hahaaa....Would have been a pain to mold in a new stock light, then run the risk of it happening again...Soooo just carved em out and slapped in some after markets.

Gotter in black today....The lights are just sitting there..No bump stops under the hood yet so it's kinda floaty right now...All in all, almost done..:headbang: Pretty slick lookin fer Tractor paint I think

Had to buy all new headlights because they don't sell the other one separate..How stupid is that!!!....Figured if he has to get new ones, might as well get something different...These have black inside the housings, kinda fits the theme...Still waiting on a fog light in da mail.

Personally Dell I Didn,t Care Much for it Before Kinda Just Looked like A Glued on Kit , A Lil Bit to MadMaxy fer Me.

But The Black & the New Lights Front & Rear , Match Much better with the Body Mods & Everything Flows together , A Huge Improvement IMHO . Hell I Like it Better then Having Color on it . Personally I Think Ole Bambi did Him a big Favor. lol . Good show once again . CB

I'm not a big fan of flat paint either, but this really works well with the new "style" body....

Thank ya Jimmy.

Yeah the black does have a cool sheen to it...Got it all done today. Mounted the lights and all the details...One bump stop needs replacing for the hood, so it's kinda low on the drivers side.

I parked it out front of the house..The owner hasn't seen it yet, He drives by here after work at, hopin he digs..haha

Pins, hmmmm, Im not a big fan of pins, but now that ya mention it..Got me ponderin..

He mentioned some white on it..I mentioned the only down side is we can't clear it..So any graphics you could feel the tape edge..I think some big stripes or graphics would be kinda tacky done that way.

But pins, Hmmmm..Old skool pins are made to be on top.hahaa,,..Maybe a dark red and white. Might be kinda snazzy...I'll have to bring it up to him.

Thanks Norm!
