umm are you married lolol im jokin, i've always wanted to get into portait, so i have no clue, im guessin its based on shadow and highlighting areas and knowing where to apply that at. im in mind later on get some of driscolls portrait dvds. just never had yet. your step by step on the lord of rings gremlin has given me a good idea what to expect, so i know definitly im going to do it. dont know when due to the fact im into graphics at the moment. got a question tho can i do portaits with the iwata cs ?

LOL...yes to your first question!! LOL
You are correct when you say its all a question of controlling shadows and highlights. All free hand work....well at least 98% of it. If you are serious in working more in more portraits, the Dricoll DVD's are good to look at. They helped me progress immensely!!!
Funny thing is that I would recommend you to try a portrait on black T with some white with various degrees of dilution and some black to come back for some crisp detailing. I find it alot more forgiving on fabric then say working on a canvas.
As far as your airbrush is concerned, the CS (I assume this is from the Eclipse series) has a .35 needle nozzle kit which in my opinion is big for working portraits on canvas or Bristol like surfaces. This airbrush is perfect for T-shirt work. That's what I use.
The paint is what will govern what airbrush to use and because you want to work in very light coats of paint, this means you are over reducing your paint making it thin and allowing it to flow nicely with a small airbrush like a .2mm or less airbrush needle. I'm afraid that with the .35, you might have trouble controlling the thin lines. Maybe try it and see.
Hope this helps!!

Hate to disagree with you Luc, but almost all (90%) of my stuff is done with my Eclipse SBS. You can pull a line as fine as you need to, this is of course just my opinion. If you use a larger needle/nozzle combo you can have a wider range of control, it'll also help with the tip dry.:wink2:

And this is working with very very thin paint?? Oh well, sorry for the wrong info. I'll load up some Holbein paint in my SBS and see what happens. Somehow, I cant imagine having the small droplets of paint as fine as when working with the Micron SB.
Thanks for replying Clinton.

Oh no don't get me wrong Luc didn't mean it that way. I'm just so used to using my SBS that it works better than the small needle/nossle combo for my stuff. And I can go from fine detail to a nice wide shade without changing my brush out. This is just what i'm used to and I don't have a problem with the larger AB. And as I stated this is just my opinion and I could(most likely) be wrong. You didn't give any mis information, I just didn't fully agree with it.:) :wink2:

No problem chief!!! :party-smiley-042: I'm sometimes quick with my own conclusions (my wife is constantly on my case regarding this!!! LOL) Whenever I have very small lines to pull, I automatically go to my smaller airbrushes...but I agree with you that you CAN do fine lines with the SBS. Just not sure how it would work with the Holbein or Com-Art paints when overr educed. This I'll have to try and see how it performs!!
