This is something I do for some time - wheels

With this project was first time I used water based paints. Big worry was about spraying candy but I think I done quite well.

My projects usually begin with set like this below

I have ordered brand new polished wider outer rims, gold plated bolts, badges and SS valves

I use AutoAir paints with this project - first time ever.
After preparing I followed with:
- dark base
- metallic gold
- yellow candy
- orange candy
- apple red candy
- urethane clear

I'm not really sure if yellow and orange candy was necessary steps - I mean if changed anything in final look.

Anyway that how they turned out

after talking to folks that do powder coatings on wheels, I am curious if you will not have problems on the bottom side inside of the rim where the tire sets, with chipping etc?
but as far as the outside, LOVE IT!!!

I'd also be curious as to how well the paint hold up after awhile...Round here paint and powder coat on wheels wont last the winter....But I live in the boonies with more winter than any other season..LOL

Great job indeed!..Sure makes for a hell of an improvement...Thanks for showing!!!

I'm not a fan of powder coating - personally I think is cheap way.
Non of wheels comes from factory powder coated.
Definitely preparing is crucial and is done with atention to detail the same way as body work on cars.
Urethane clears are probably the most durable finish you can get and thousends of custom cars are sprayed the same way.
I don't worry and I'm convinced this is one of the best finishes you can get.

Hahaa..Yeah I figured so:D

I'm also no fan of powder coating...I'd rather paint it...Everything I've ever had that's PC'd fell off within a year..LOL

Geez Dell, who does your powder coating? If it only lasts a year something is wrong! granted powdercoating has its place but I agree, I would rather paint it as well. alsa makes some really cool paints designed to go on wheels. when done properly they last quite a long time and offer many more custom oppertunities.
Nice addition to painting only the tins.

Powder coating and the new ice melt for the roads don't like each other.. I"ve heard of alot of people having problems with the powder coat peeling off. if the salt sits too long..
oh edit here.. nice look on the wheels.. rafal..

odd we usualy go for powdercoating becouse of its durability but the winters in england are pretty mild due to the old global warming but if your wheels had sound paintwork in the first place wet paintings them is fine plus you wont be limited by the powder coaters colour selection

the other trick is to have them powdercoated in etch primer first then either finnished wet or powdered again to colour

anyway they turned out nice and yeh you probably didnt benifit much by useing yellow and orange first as the red will overpower all those colours and the orange is just yellow and red mixed anyway LOL

hows your fingers after sanding all those spokes haha

It sounds like all of you have dealt with powder coaters who do not know what they are doing. I own a wheel company and on have 3 sets of wheels a day sent to the powder coater. And in the 4 years that I have been having wheels P/C'd have never once had a complaint about the powder coat flaking chipping etc. I will let you in on a secret. Powder coating is only as good as the prep work prior to coating. And secondly once the wheels are done being coated and cooked anybody who knows anything about powdercoating wouldnt stop there they would finish the job up by clearing them lastly. And with this final step it hides the orange peel sometimes p/c gets also makes the wheels finish last a hell of alot longer. Try this and you will have a whole new outlook about powder coating
