Hey peeps
I've been planning to try out doing flames for the first time. My question is regarding working on black. Is it advisable always to pain a black background or does painting on black paper work?
Currently I'm using Acrylic Inks, but I'm thinking maybe I'm gonna need to go for something a little harder core ( Createx? Com-Art? ) if I want to get proper opaque results...all advice welcome!
Peace

I'd think black paper would be OK...Usually not as Black as black paint is...But hell it's only practice right, I'm sure it'll still give the overall vibe:D
Lotsa paints out there, that's a whole head ache of it's own...Don't think I've tried com-Art..But I hate Createx...hahaha!

For me painting on black is the hardest but once you get a hang of it, it looks the best. Just practice on black paper thats how i started

I presume the paper will soak the paint up more than metal or alu. But I doubt if it will effect the quallity of the piece
Alu works great though. A 50 x 50 cm panel ya can sand over & over for practice... The reason for that is...once ya have a kickass painting, ya can frame it. Paper doesn't last as well over the years...

Paper will work, just gotta deide how your doing the flames, some will lay the base in white, building the shapes, then in with the colours. Just make sure your inks dry so you don't get them bleeding into each other.

black paper works.. black illustration board....black foam core.....black fabric...
use opaque white to lay it out..then come in over that with transparents....use white again...then transparents again....do a few layers like that.
rule of thumb.....
loose to tight (your first layers are real loose..not much detail...add detail as you add layers)
dark to light (first layers are the darkest.....subsequent layers get lighter....final is bright)
also.....fire is usually triangular shaped....the tips are darker and the bottom is brighter....but freedom rocks and fire is very organic.
from there it's all techniques......have fun!

I don't like being a poopy! Its alright to practice on a different black but black is not just black! Some blacks are bluer than others and I don't know if it is due to red pigments in the black or not! I've did enough spot repairs on blacks to know not unless they have standardized black since I have been in the business! I've never known any paint company that wants to get along with the other kids in the sand box! I guess what I'm saying is don't necessarily trust what you are seeing if its not the black you are going to use on the paint job!

try using auto air, its a step up from createx although made by the same company. and for practice, black paper is OK, but if you ever doing a project, i would definitely paint a black background on posterboard for example.
a tip for painting on black: paint the outline of what your going to do in white, and then go over that with the colors for more a more vibrant picture.
